A woman has been accused of leaving her 3-week-old baby in the street in front of an Elgin salon where she was having her hair done after her boyfriend refused to watch the girl, police said.

Jennifer Jones, 21, of the 1100 block of Fleetwood Drive, Elgin, was charged Thursday with reckless conduct and endangering the life of a child, police said. She was released on $100 cash bond and ordered to appear in court March 7.

An off-duty security guard from Sherman Hospital who watched the incident unfold from a barbershop window dashed outside, grabbed the baby and brought her to the sidewalk, where he confronted Jones.

"We didn't know what she was doing," said security guard Noel Arroyo. "She left the baby in the middle of Chicago Street, and there were cars going around the baby."

Another customer of the barbershop called police.

Police took the baby to the Elgin Police Department, which contacted the Department of Children and Family Services. DCFS placed the baby in the care of her grandmother.

This is the second time DCFS has investigated Jones for neglect. In 2000, she was accused of providing inadequate supervision of her 2-month-old son, who was was placed in his grandmother's care.

This is horrid. Why can't moralizing busy-bodies just mind their own business? No one was hurt, after all. < /sarcasm >

This couple can best be described as Dumb and Dumber.

The $100 bond sure fits the crime. /sarcasm

This nitwit should have her tubes tied after she gets out of jail. She obviously doesn't have what it takes to be a mother. Her boyfriend should do the same.

What's all the fuss about from the authorities? This is same, morally, as an abortion.

Well, I'm sure proud of our judicial system. They work hard to protect the innocent, that's for sure.I mean, hey, she only goes over the double yellow line every couple of years or so.

Tie her tubes indeed. Tie them around her neck and hang her by them.

Too late -- she's already out of jail. And she has over a month in which to get pregnant again before she's even due to show up in court.

We REALLY need to overhaul the whole concept of bail in this country.

If you can't nail 'em in the third trimester, get 'em in the fourth. It's just a simple post-birth abortion.

Where's NARAL to defend Ms. Jones?

That's not neglect, it's definitely child endangerment at the least.

The mayor or governor of her city or state should be taking notes right now on the child protection workers of this case.

Someone better be on their job.

I believe in non-voluntary sterilization for cases like this.

It says alot about the dissolution of our society when young, self-centered parents choose to make their child pay the price of interfering with her mother's haircut and her father's auto shop appointment. It is appauling that neither parent could put the need of the child (first would be nice - but a real stretch for these two) somewhere in the equation. You know for a fact that both adults(?) are blaming everyone else for their raw deal. Disgusting!

This is (crooked) Illinois we're talking about, remember the state where our recent ex-governer granted immunity to all the death row inmates!!! Haven't a clue what the new governor will be like, no one ever hears or sees them in the news once they are elected!!
