Greenpeace blockade in Rotterdam (Greenpeace blocks US military transport harbor Rotterdam)
Radio Netherlands ^ | Februari 20 2003

Posted on 02/20/2003 3:44:40 AM PST by knighthawk

The environmental organisation Greenpeace is trying to stop a ship carrying US military equipment from sailing from the port of Rotterdam. The organisation has deployed its ship Rainbow Warrior-2 and four smaller vessels. Activists are trying to tie themselves to the ship's hawsers. Police have arrested at least six people.

The equipment on board the ship is destined for the Gulf region. The blockade is intended to reflect to Greenpeace's roots in the peace movement. In a statement, the organisation says that a war would have devastating consequences for both people and the environment.

Just ignore them and sail on, whether they are in the way, or not...

Hmmm.. Doesn't this Greenpeace challenge cry out for the French?! They could relive the glory of France's greatest military achievement in almost 200 years!

I hope they can swim with chains on, because I consider that an act of war. I suppose we'll have to play "nice", though, and call in a tug to haul their backsides out of there.

When they tried that nonsense with the French they simply fired upon and sank "Rainbow Warrior I".

I wonder how the left would feel if we took France's cue on this issue.

"In a statement, the organisation says that a war would have devastating consequences for both people and the environment."
And staying in the way of our military will have devastating consequences on their physical well-being...

The ship should be seized and converted to something useful.

As for firing on it, we can't very well do that in the Netherlands--they'd make our people stay for some kind of court proceeding, I'm sure.

But it will be in international waters one of these days...

Don't be surprised if it loses all it's electronics one of these days. The ocean has a mind of its own sometimes. We've all heard of the Bermuda Triangle...

Fox just ran a tape of them finally arresting Sami Al-Arian! It's about time.

The clock is ticking faster now.

At what point can you act with force against such impediments? These are U.S. military vessels. I know they'd love the altercation for political reasons, but perhaps a stay in the U.S. navy brig might alter their perception.

Apparently this is a merchant marine vessel, not a military one.

From the Rotterdams Dabglad:
The ship from the Nile Dutch Africa line, flying under the Cypriot flag was hired by the American government. The police took strong actions and arrested 7 of 25 protesters. Two rubber boats and a canoe were also taken.
