If He Can Pull It Off

If President Bush can pull off the war and win in Iraq, it would be one of the great achievements since President Lincoln oversaw the American Civil War. In the last couple of weeks the EU and the American left with its willing accomplices in the media had hit him with every thing they got to undermine his war plans. We are going into this war with less support from our critical allies such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey and a more vocal anti-War movement nipping at our domestic front. President Bush is also operating with a smaller Clinton military that must carry out the war and simultaneously keep an eye out at a belligerent nuclear armed North Korea. Despite all this, President Bush has maintained a steady and persistant policy. Unlike President Carter, he will not waffle and unlike President Clinton, he is willing to take care of the problems now and not hand it down to future generations. I think we can pull it off, just keep the faith, because our military leaders understand that war is not just about advanced technological weapons, body counts and see non-Western armies as inferior (that is what hurt our initial military leaders in the early days of Vietnam) soldiers. Our leaders assume the worst, prepare and hope for the best. With our technological edge and abundance in resourses (compare to the next 14 nations combined) and a realistic assessment, I think GWB will pull it off. I hope he does, because the political rewards for those who stood by him are great.

His desire to pull it off "perfectly," is the problem. There is no way to get through a war without making mistakes and taking casualties. Bush can't seem to come to terms with that. The quest for perfection is producing paralysis. Meanwhile, our enemies strengthen their hand.

To compare Bush with Lincoln is unfair to Bush. Instead, compare Bush to Reagan. Just my opinion.

No, I don't think so. His desire is to keep casulties on BOTH sides to a minimum is what is slowing the beginning. We have more than enough troops and planes and artillery over there to complete the job now. However, Turkey is soliciting a bribe bigger than we have offered before they allow us to get into place for the northern assault southward. THAT is the major stumbling block for the war, IMO.

If he can pull off this war, and the terraforming of the Middle East, he will go down as one of this countries greatest Presidents.

And no, I am not a big Bush fan or lover, but I do respect the guy for what he has been able to do.

Lincoln had to conduct a shooting war followed by military occupation. Initially many politicians saw him as a not so bright, bumbling idiot. He went thru several military defeats and political setbacks, but he kept to the strategic plan (divide the South and blockade) until he found an effective general to lead the Army of the Potomac. During that time many of his political allies in the GOP along with the opposition Democrats turned on him for the failures. He was demonized and mocked by the press. Bush is facing the same prospects, but his character and persistance will see him through it.
