Isn't Joplin, Missouri the hometown of George Washington Carver? Now that was a great man. He gets virtually forgotten, and yet everyone knows who Jesse Jackson is. Amazing.

The George Washington Carver home was about 2.5 miles west of Diamond Grove, Missouri. I lived 1.5 miles farther west from the age of 2.5 to 14. I've walked the Carver farm a number of times. I walked our own 120 acre farm many more.

Diamond Grove, Missouri is about 10-12 miles southeast of Joplin. I lived there from the age of 14 through 18.

The sad thing about Carver and Booker T Washington, is that the loud mouths Jackson and Sharpton eclipse them. It's also a shame that Martin Luther King Jr. steals the spotlight from them.

I absolutely detest the attention King gets. Decades before he did his thing, these men were blazing trails for blacks. If a holiday were named for either of them, I'd have a hard time objecting. King can't hold a candle to them.

George Washington Carver is very well remembered here in Iowa, because he attended my alma mater, Iowa State. He is considered one of our most prominent alumni. Our local (Des Moines) paper featured him in an article about Black History Month last week, in fact.

Good luck down there in Joplin...I have traveled there MANY times for business. Last time I was there, I ate at a GREAT 40's style restaurant that prominently featured patriotic WWII memorabilia everywhere (even the menu!).

I was born in Glendale, California actually. When I turned eighteen I registered for the draft and moved back. I've been there since. I spent 26.5 years working in the hospital where I was born. I met my wife there, who was also born in the same hospital.

I grew up in Carl Junction, which is right outside of Joplin. It is one of the most conservative Republican areas of the country. The people down there always get it right in terms of electing good, conservative people.

Tabby's home town! I wish I was there.

Okay, I wish I were in Antigua, but I'd like to see my friends in Joplin soon.

Sent this info to my friend in Joplin. She works at a Walgreens there. Said someone brought a poster in about the rally today and they put it up for their customers to see.

Hope you get a big turnout.

There used to be a restaurant in Joplin called the Garbage Pail.

I stopped in there on a drive from California to Massachusetts in the early 1980s. If I remember, their gimmick would be that they would bring breakfast to you in a small pail like the ones below.
