France's largest oil company, Total Fina Elf, has negotiated a deal to develop the Majnoon field in western Iraq. The Majnoon field purportedly contains up to 30 billion barrels of oil. To put this into perspective, the U.S. Geological Survey, updated May 2000, estimated that ANWR might contain up to 16 billion barrels of oil. Link:

This is greed, pure and simple. The French are trying to play us for fools, pretending their actions are principled or even enlightened self interest. They don't care a wit about the Iraqis - but then again, don't the French also use torture as a tool? Birds of a feather?

Thanks for the ping.
It's interesting that the same source (CIA World Factbook) shows that Australia accounts for 22% of Iraq's imports. Australia's stake is actually much bigger than France's if you consider the relative size of the Australian economy. Yet Australia supports the U.S. position. It seems to me that these other countries (France etc.) just don't like the exercise of American power.

You have to factor in the United Nations use of the EPA in this country and the many agencies in which the UN and EPA are 'parterners'. Alaskans don't own Alaska, the EPA and United Nations do via our own Federal Government and political correctness to all.
I do believe we are dumping oil - who gets the benifits? Interesting question...........

It was reported on Tony Snowe (Brit Hume show actually) yesterday that French politicians, including Chirac, have gotten rich through dealing with Saddam Hussein and that if France fails to prevent an Iraq war that Iraq has threatened to reveal these personal fortunes and how they were made.

A very nice synopsis, RS.
But it neglects our "friends" in the UN--
While the UN has sold more than $61 billion dollars worth of Iraqi oil during the past six years under the so-called Oil for Food (OF) program, very little has been written about where that money has actually gone. Although the UN has managed $61 billion of Iraqs oil revenues since 1996, the global organization refuses to take $16 million from the funds to pay Iraqs membership dues, thus depriving Iraq of its vote in the General Assembly. The UNs OF program, which began in 1996, is generally portrayed as a program designed to provide the long-suffering Iraqi population with food in exchange for Iraqi crude. The programs name Oil for Food is deceptive, however, for it hides the fact that much of the money actually winds up in UN bank accounts - and those of its friends.
Although not widely known, it is clear that the UN OF program has been operated as a huge money making scheme for the globalist institution, which has been greatly enriched by Iraqi oil proceeds, while the basic needs of the Iraqi people have gone unmet.

An excellent post!
If I were president, I'd take this list and start marking them off one at a time as each one of this "accommodtations" were dismantled.

The key figures are not only the commerce conducted with Iraq presently and in the future but the debts already accumulated by Saddam that remain unrepaid and outstanding. I would expect that Russia, France and Germany head that list and the Russians in particular are most interested in collecting due to its pathetic fiscal condition.

French total trade with Iraq under the oil-for-food program is the third largest, totaling $3.1 billion since 1996 Our trade was $4B in 1999 alone (census bureau) so we benefitted much more than the French.

How can you forget the cosy economic relationship between the Muslim Turks and Iraq?
From arabicnews.com
"Worthy mentioning that the volume of the Turkish exports to Iraq reached in 2001 USD 709.6 million and the Turkish companies in the course of the sanctions imposed on Iraq signed more than 800 contracts with Baghdad at a value of USD 1.5 billion."

So what you're saying is, if it ever gets around to getting rid of the House of Saud (which supports most of the terrorists around the world) US companies will just sit by and do nothing to pressure DC to make sure it doesn't happen? Hell, they already are putting on all the pressure to make sure it doesn't happen. Countries have economic interests, it's a given. Why else does the US support the last great Communist state with all its money?
