VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -- Pope John Paul will send a senior cardinal to Washington on a personal peace mission to try to avert a war in Iraq, the Vatican said on Saturday.

Cardinal Pio Laghi, for many years the Vatican's ambassador to the United States, will leave in the next few days and will deliver a letter from the pope to U.S. President George W. Bush.

On Fox News they quoted the Pope as saying that "there was NO Moral Reason to attack Iraq.",P.

I really dont think that the pope is anyone to speak about morality these days....if he wants to try speaking about morality, he should be doing so with his following of pedophile clergy.

"The cardinal ... will illustrate the position and the initiatives taken by the Holy See to contribute to disarmament and peace in the Middle East," the Vatican said in a statement.

good intentions notwithstanding, aforementioned "initiatives" have accomplished squat. i seem to remember a little something about the vatican being on the wrong side of world war II, also.

You need to pay attention. He's repeatedly condemned the immoral and illegal behavior of pedophiles masquerading as Catholic priests.

Yes, but obsessing over the Pope gives people leave to ignore the more frequent and statistically likely sexual contact between public school teachers and their students.

The Vatican does not believe an attack on Iraq could be considered a "just war," opposes U.N. economic sanctions against Iraq and argues that diplomacy is the only way to settle the dispute.

Etchegarry did a hell of lot of good in Baghdad a couple of weeks ago, didn't he?

So, no war, no sanctions, just sit back and let Hussein develop weapons of mass destruction.

Let's pat the Pope on the head and get back to the business of liberating the Iraqi people.

Last month the 82-year-old pontiff sent a special envoy to Baghdad to try to persuade Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors.

Well, that obviously didn't work, so he's sending somebody to us? I suggest handing the envoy a tax bill on his church's U.S. assets, since Il Papa has seen fit to blur the lines of separation between church and politics (again).

Oh, I pay attention alright, I also notice how he has been against the reforms that were to be taken in the US against such clergy members. He thinks his "Word of Law" is above the law of our land.

pat..pat..pat...Mr. Pontif, you may now return to your seat.

As much as I respect the Pope, I have to disagree with him on this one. I am not going to sit back and let some madman make weapons that can kill thousands. I'm sorry, sometimes you have to break some eggs to make an omlet.

This is an issue of anthrax, botulin, VX, mustard, nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.

It is just.

They are going to use those on their neighbors and us. Self-defense is justified.

Nor is this a ruling ex cathedra, if that even applies in this case.

I used to have great respect for the pope. It was all irrevocably lost when he got down on his knees and kissed the Koran, an unholy book which denies that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Today’s News.

1. The Pope sends an emissary to Washington to attempt to sway the US goal of installing Democracy (by way of force) in Iraq and the surrounding neighborhood.

2. Seventy nine Muslim murderers who killed 21 Coptic Christians a few years ago are released as the Egyptian (Islamic) court found them not guilty. It did however find one person guilty of killing a Muslim. What sayth the Pope?

Why should I not conclude the Pope is a Dope?

Ditto

You guys know how I feel about the Pope making and stands on Morality.

I am barred from stating the obvious with respect to the Pope yet praised for making the same observation about an Imam or French leader.

Wrong again. Try and do some independent research before you regurgitate the pablum you lap up from the talking heads, sucker. You may now return your head to your dirt chute.

No I don't, but since the Pope and Reagan brought down communism, I give him a fair amount of lattitude, even where I disagree with him. We should also consider the consequences for jihad if the Pope were to come out four square for the War. Not especially pretty.

Also, one might consider how the witness of the Pope's innate goodness humbled and tamed the Islamic soul of his own would-be assassin.

The Pope is not on the same moral plane as the President of France or an Imam, and his opposition to this war should not be viewed in that context.

You're right, of course, and he likely knows he's wasting his breath with Saddam Hussein.

The Pope has to say what he says, and we have to do what we will do.

I think a nice billboard campaign, with those statements, will go on to really get the RCC the type of respect it has earned in this nation.

The run of the mill Catholics that are my friends (the ones who aren't conservative, don't give a rats behind about Latin masses and don't care about birth control) are disgusted with the Vatican and the French. They're profoundly pro-American.
