Kofi Annandersen: Enron-style accounting at the U.N. Oil-for-Food Program.

Who is Saddam Hussein's biggest business partner?

The United Nations. The same U.N. whose secretary-general, Kofi Annan, stands as one of the chief ditherers over removing Saddam. Here are the ingredients of a conflict of interest.

Under the U.N.'s Office of the Iraq Program, which supervises the six-year-old Oil-for-Food Program, the U.N. has had a hand in the sale of more than $55 billion worth of Iraqi oil. Iraq ships oil out to U.N.-approved buyers under the terms of the sanctions agreement. The U.N. vets the inflow of "humanitarian" imports into Iraq.

Thanks for the ping, howlin--I think.

Why isn't Peanut Boy all over this with his election auditors? Seems like it would be right up his humanitarian alley. And why do I smell slimy X42 snail tracks all over this one? Wasn't he sniffing around last week for a spot as Secretary General? Floating trial balloons, perhaps?

Once again, totally disgusted.

Jeeze....what a sweetheart deal. Things are starting to make a little more sense.

Why am I not surprised? When will I stop be so naive as to not suspect money is behind all this? Follow the money!

Thanks for the ping, Howlin.

This absolutely makes me want to throw up.!

I always said, The U.N. is nothing but a
playgroud for the pseudo-intellectual
left, to give them a platform for their
misguided ideals. Now they are complicit
with a despot!!

Howlin, I offered a more nefarious conspiracy theory regarding the "oil for food" scam on this thread. I think this U.N program is the epicenter of a mechanism funding international terror. The program has enabled an oil smuggling regime that has sent up to 400,000 barrels per day of black market oil from Iraq into Syria and Iran - two sweetheart nations we all know and love. At $20/barrel average, that's around $8 million per day, or $3 billion annually in the hands of the countries most responsible for sponsoring terror. Countries that buy weapons and engineering technology from the North Koreans, Russians and Chinese. Countries that sponsor Hizbullah, Hamas, al Qaida etc. Consider this ... if Bin Laden ONLY took a 5% commission for moving the smuggled oil back through his Saudi contacts and into the larger market, that would be $150 million per year. You could run a 98 country terror network with that money. Scary stuff.

Ho, boy... What a classic boondoggle... This aspect never occurred to me, I must admit. I've seen a bit recently regarding this junk, but do not recall reading this article, or seeing such a well detailled and explanatory discussion of the UNs cash cow.

Thanks to the author.

Thanks to Howlin - keep me on your mandatory read ping list.

Thanks to Cicero for reposting it --- even if it had been posted in the past, it needed to be reposted currently.

I should have gotten the Advil first, too, Mo1.
