J'ACCUSE
National Review Online ^ | 3/12/2003 | David Frum

Posted on 03/12/2003 8:32:08 AM PST by hchutch

“J’Accuse” is the title of one of the most famous polemics of the century – Emile Zola’s 1898 open letter accusing the leaders of the French Army of deliberately framing Col. Alfred Dreyfus. Zola's letter takes its title from the ringing paragraphs at the finale:

“I accuse Lt. Col. du Paty de Clam ... I accuse General Mercier ... I accuse General Billot ... etc.”

Dreyfus was of course Jewish, and the battle between the Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards quickly transformed itself into a grand argument over the place of Jews in France. The anti-Dreyfusards regarded Jews as inherently alien and disloyal by definition. Facts never mattered much to them: When it was finally proven that one of the documents that condemned Dreyfus had in fact been falsified by the Army, a leading anti-Dreyfusard named Charles Maurras hailed the “heroic forgery.”

As little as they liked Dreyfus, however, the anti-Dreyfusards liked Emile Zola if possible even less. They charged him with libel, prosecuted, and convicted him – many of them threatened to murder him; they succeeded instead in driving him into exile. He died in 1902 under suspicious circumstances; some believe he was murdered in retaliation for his defense of Dreyfus. So it is really rather a perverse triumph for the author of “J’Accuse” that the anti-Dreyfusards of our day now seek to borrow Zola’s words.

Yet there they are in the current issue of The American Conservative under the byline of Pat Buchanan.

“We charge that a cabal of polemicists and public officials seek to ensnare our country in a series of wars that are not in America’s interests. We charge them with colluding with Israel to ignite those wars and destroy the Oslo Accords. We charge them with deliberately damaging U.S. relations with every state in the Arab world that defies Israel or supports the Palestinian people’s right to a homeland of their own. We charge that they have alienated friends and allies all over the Islamic and Western world through their arrogance, hubris, and bellicosity.”

Buchanan’s authority to decide which wars are in America’s interest and which are not is rather badly tarnished by his own opposition to the liberation of Kuwait in 1991 and the opposition of many of his neo-isolationist pals to the campaign against the Taliban. Even more bizarre is this sudden concern for "friends and allies" from a man who has spent the past decade and a half denying that America needed either.

More on all that for another day. In the meantime, here is a rewriting of “J’Accuse” that is perhaps more in keeping with the ideals and principles of its original author, who – though a lifelong man of the Left – was always a patriot.

“We charge that a cabal of writers who misuse the title of ‘conservatives’ are rallying to defend an Iraqi dictator who has waged war on American allies, attempted to assassinate an American president, fired on American aircraft, and who is now arming to threaten Americans with mass murder.

“We charge them with making common cause with left-wing radicals and radical Islamists, former communists and other people who hate the United States – all in order to prematurely halt the war on terror and preserve the Iraqi dictator’s rule.

“We charge them with forgetting George Washington’s warning in his Farewell Address against ‘habitual hatred’ for any nation – and instead allowing their unreasoning loathing of the Jewish state to lead them into what Washington condemned as a ‘passionate attachment’ to Baathist Iraq.

“We charge them with disregarding their wartime duty to lay aside their prejudices and resentments for the sake of the common good. We charge them with attempting to undermine a conservative Republican president in a moment of national emergency. We charge them with acting as excuse-makers for America’s enemies. We charge them with failing to put America first.”

Buchanen has been anti-semitic for a long time. Apparently, Nixon shared that anti-semitism given his recently revealed comments to Billy Graham. Billy repented of his anti-semitic words spoken to curry favor with Nixon.

Fortunately, Nixon was a Rino (read: liberal who imposed price controls) and no conservative.

True conservatives don't hold race, color, religion against a person. They know that each have been endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.

Good for Frum. I have book marked to use whenever one of Bucky Buck Wheat's legions attack our president.

Good for Frum. Buchanan's editorial made me ill. I'm not Jewish, and I've got no particular attachment to the state of Israel. But I support the effort to oust this scumbag dictator who breached a ceasefire obtained at the cost of American lives. And I deeply resent Buchanan's implicit accusation that I'm just a stooge of the jews for feeling that way.

Local Jew Feels Left Out of Worldwide Jewish Conspiracy
The Onion
April 30, 1997

http://members.tripod.com/~jewishjokes/JEW-CONSP.HTM

SOUTHFIELD, MI--It is an hour past sunset on a brisk Thursday night, and, like their brethren around the globe, the Jews of this affluent Detroit suburb are gathered in synagogues, busily hatching plots for world domination through financial chicanery and media influence. But for Seth Nussbaum, it will be just another lonely evening.

"For some reason, they've decided to leave me out of the worldwide Jewish conspiracy," said Nussbaum, a 34-year-old computer programmer. "And I can't say it doesn't hurt."

While his fellow Jews are controlling the flow of billions of dollars of international currency and brokering multi million-dollar entertainment deals, on this quiet night Nussbaum is making himself a frozen pizza and watching ER, far removed from any money beyond the $28,000 annual salary he receives from his job at Cyntech Industries.

"Who's to say I wouldn't enjoy hoarding a little gold every now and then?" he said, his voice tinged with bitterness. "Believe me, I'd love to be able to sneak around behind the scenes like the Elders of Zion, pulling the strings and holding the real power in society. But I guess when it comes to working the Jerusalem-New York-L.A. triangle, I just wasn't one of the chosen people."

Unlike millions of other Jews around the world, Nussbaum holds no sway over the media, has no powerful friends within the Wall Street banking community or the Trilateral Commission, and has never run a major Hollywood studio.

In fact, Nussbaum doesn't even own so much as his own production company. "Spielberg, Geffen, Ovitz, Eisner, Katzenberg--those are the Jews who control Hollywood," Nussbaum said. "And there's countless other Jews calling the shots at every level of the entertainment industry, from agents to producers to directors. But me? I probably couldn't even get the studio backing for a $15 to $20 million romantic comedy with a mid-level star like Matthew Broderick."

And despite being a regular subscriber to The New York Times for seven years, Nussbaum has no powerful connections among the Jews who own that and every other newspaper in the United States.

"As a left-leaning Jew, I should enjoy vast influence over the press. I should be able use the papers and television stations I own to forward my biased, liberal Jewish agenda and get Israel-supporting Democratic candidates elected to Congress," said Nussbaum, sitting on the old futon he uses as a couch. "But somehow, that's just not the case."

Spurned by his own kind, Nussbaum has not even been able to gain admittance into a secondary world-domination conspiracy like the Masons. "They turned down my application," he said, sighing deeply, "when they found out I was Jewish. I guess for now I'll just have to resign myself to being Seth Nussbaum, computer programmer and powerless Jew."

Sean Hannity fielded a nutcase call on last night's radio show. Hannity called the guy anti-Semitic and said he needed a shrink.

But Hannity sort of botched the whole thing when he said that Buchanan does not hold the views which the caller has. Evidently, Buchanan does hold those very views.

Did you hear Imus this morning?

He was talking about Buchanen with David Gregory. Imus told Gregory that Buchanen had lost a relative in the German concentration camps.

He fell off of a guard tower.

Buchanen is no Jewish name.

I don't believe Imus until I see further evidence.

Nonetheless, this wouldn't be the first Jew who turned against other Jews. Kaganovitch did so for Stalin. Flavius Josephus did so for the Roman Legions.

Mr. Frum has a better idea of the best course of action for America than Mr. Buchanan. I ask you, why do you continute to advocate this blatatntly misuguided, naive, and stupid course of action?

Why are you defending a dictator who has waged war on American allies, attempted to assassinate an American president, fired on American aircraft, and who is now arming to threaten Americans with mass murder?

Why are you making common cause with with left-wing radicals and radical Islamists, former communists and other people who hate the United States – all in order to prematurely halt the war on terror and preserve the Iraqi dictator’s rule?

Why are you attempting to undermine a conservative Republican president in a moment of national emergency?

Why are you acting as an excuse-maker for America’s enemies?

Why are you not putting America first?

Why?

Huh? Sure Iraq will be defeated but Bush's Budget has world wide, economic ramifications (made worse by Greenspan putting ever more dollars into the market.)

As financiers decide they are better off converting their dollars into Euros where the currency is predictable, and with Europe sitting out the war, it will look very attractive. As the demand for dollars goes down, there will be serious implications to Joe Public, particularly as state governments across the country are set to raise taxes. That is my concern. I hope I am wrong.

Without stable, conservative justification for the action in Iraq, world financiers will start hedging their bets, and if the United States continues to pressure other Middle Eastern countries, financiers will continue to shift to Euros.

I am just making an observtion about the behavior of France and Germany; or do you really think that they are behaving this way because they are anti-Semites and cowards?

With the coming deficits, very little, tax relief or deregulation, another Fed Rate cut, and a war with an uncertain future, I am simply not convinced that folks will keep financing this heaven on earth we have been trying to build. I am not willing to risk the 2004 election on it.

France and Germany have done a land-office business in selling questionable items to Iraq since 1991. Bonn and Paris are afraid of what's going to happen when we dig out the Iraqi archives. We might not be in a very forgiving mood.

A further twist in France is that 10% of the electorate is Muslim, and that number is only going to increase as time goes on.

Then he was a CINO.  Face it, the purpose of Republicans is to get into office and wield the levers of power.  That's all you can expect.  We have a big-government, deficit spending, Tenth Amendment trashing Republican administration right now.  Not RINO by any stretch. CINO to the core.

The United States was doing business with Iraq even after the Kuwait invasion. Prior to that, James Baker and Rummy had signed off on the Saddam regime. They had no problem 'changing' sides, so I am not sure how powerful the argument is that leftwing French-German governments are protecting business interests.

The United States was doing business with Iraq even after the Kuwait invasion.

Irrelevant claim. The US trade with Iraq after the invasion of Kuwait was very limited and did not include WMD materials. The stuff that the French and the Germans were selling is related to the production of WMDs, and it specifically violates UN Security Council resolutions that they voted for after the invasion of Kuwait, and that they have continued to support since then.

Prior to that, James Baker and Rummy had signed off on the Saddam regime.

Irrelevant.

They had no problem 'changing' sides, so I am not sure how powerful the argument is that leftwing French-German governments are protecting business interests.

They are. Since the deals involved proscribed technologies, it boils down to the French and the Germans hoping to avoid US trade sanctions--which would probably crater their economies once and for all. The only way to do that is to not get caught.

This is from Bob Novack's review of Frums book. You'll note the mocking tone Frum has for Bush as well as his belief in man made climate change. Do you read any Conservatives or just leftists?

For much of this book, Frum seems disengaged from Bush’s policies. He refers to the president’s “energy plan fiasco,” calling it “an incoherent mess” and a “pseudoscandal.” He contends Bush “could never quite bring himself to deny that climate change was very likely real and man-made.” He says of Bush’s faith-based initiative, “instead of drawing new people to the Republican Party, it had repelled them.” Prior to Sept. 11, 2001, writes Frum,

"I began avoiding parties where I expected the questions [of Bush’s capacity for the presidency] to be posed too persistently by conservative friends, for I was not sure I would know how to answer."

"Go back and reread Post #19--ALL of it. You missed the humor."

Sick 'humor'. Implying Buchanan is a nazi is a sick type of political hate, imo.
I don't like the man, but he is not a fascist.
