This occurred on the Charlie Warren talk show on WMAL radio, AM in the Washington/Baltimore area last night. An ex CIA operative of some sort named Ray McGovern was talking about a report which Colin Powell brought to the attentioin of the Security Council and which apparently did not check out, and the gist of the conversation was that the entire Bush administration was lying to the public and that the motivation of the attack on Iraq was fundamentally flawed and dishonest. The report to the UN involved an accusation that Saddam Hussein was attempting to purchase large quantities of uranium from an African nation.
I somehow or other got onto the program and managed to stick up for George to some extent. I noted that in my view the question of Iraq and nuclear weaponry was a sort of a red herring, i.e. that Hussein was trying to get into nuclear weapons but that the thing which we needed to worry about and which he was long since into and good at, was biological weaponry. I noted that the anthrax attack on the senate office building following 9/11 had Saddam Hussein's fingerprints all over it, that it was not conceivable to me that an American could have done that and not be behind bars by now, and that such an assault would have to involve extraordinary circumstances. In other words, the one guy I could picture actually obeying an order to do anything with anthrax other than work at staying 100 miles away from it, would be the guy who was going to crash an airplane into a building three days hence anyway.
Warren asked what I would do about it, and I replied that I'd do exactly what George W. Bush is doing.
Nonetheless, it would have been good to have had some sort of a heavyweight on the air or somebody who knew more about this Ray McGovern and what his motivations might be.
Anybody have any theories or thoughts on this one?
