Iraqis begin to celebrate their liberation (Liberation of the small border town of Sawfan)
"Americans very good," Ali Khemy said. "Iraq wants to be free."

Some chanted, "Ameriki! Ameriki!"

Many others in the starving town just patted their stomachs and raised their hands, begging for food.

A man identifying himself only as Abdullah welcomed the arrival of the U.S. troops: "Saddam Hussein is no good. Saddam Hussein a butcher."

An old woman shrouded in black -- one of the very few women outside -- knelt toward the feet of Americans, embracing an American woman. A younger man with her pulled her away, giving her a warning sign by sliding his finger across his throat...

"No Saddam Hussein!" one young man in headscarf told Gurfein. "Bush!"

I saw footage of Iraqi citizens literally dancing with joy today. Shaking hands with our troops. Laughing. Smiling. Amazing stuff.

I'm always proud to be an American, but wow...

Fox 13 Salt Lake City showed some dancing in the streets. I'm not sure if the video was a file tape or something that just happened, but I'll post if I find anything that happened today.

I saw that too. Also saw the Iraqi taking a shoe and hitting a poster of Saddam as a Marine tore it down.

As I said on another thread, Bush has more support from the Iraqis than he does from peaceniks. Extremely sad, really.

"I saw footage of Iraqi citizens literally dancing with joy today. Shaking hands with our troops. Laughing. Smiling."

And beating the poster of Saddam, partly torn down, with a shoe. I hope there is lots and lots of this kind of thing. The left needs to choke on crow!

I'm hoping the American troops resist the temptation to destroy the images of Saddam. I think it's important that the people do that - it's cathartic, and it helps them to cement this historic moment in the minds of the Iraqi children.

They don't exactly look like they're celebrating. The guy on the right may be starting a cautious raise-the-roof gesture, but he might just be doing his crab impression for the amusement of that soldier or Marine.

The largest challenge lies ahead when we attempt to bring these people into the 21st century. Patton said they were stuck in the 8th. Short buses?
