Here is a little history on the 173rd:
"The Troopers of the 173d Airborne Brigade (SEP) wear their combat badges and decorations with pride. During more than six years of nearly continuous combat in Vietnam, The brigade earned 14 campaign streamers and four unit citations, had 13 Medal of Honor winners, had over 130 distinguished service crosses winners, and awarded over 6,000 purple hearts, conducted the only U.S. combat parachute assault of the war, and sadly, over 1700 names of Sky Soldiers on the wall."
Sounds like an impressive outfit to me.

They were the only airborne unit to make a combat jump in Vietnam. If you see a nam vet with a gold star on his jump wings you know what he did.

They are very real.

173rd Airborne (my old outfit) was the first major Army unit in Viet Nam.
After Viet Nam they were deactivated for awhile, but then reactivated and are based in Italy.
How I wish I was with them.
Oh, they also made the only combat jump in Viet Nam.

I think they're based in Italy.
Screw the Turks. After we form a viable unit up north, I say we let the Kurds take eastern Turkey.

The 173rd ABN BDE SEP formed from the battalion of the 503rd infantry battalions. Made historic combat jump in WWII on the island of Corrigador. Reactivated in 1960 or 61 not certain, in Okinawa. May of 1965 deployed to Vietnam as the first Army ground unit in Vietnam. First into warzone D, first into C zone, first into the Iron Triangle, first into the mekong delta region. Deactivated in 1971 and the battalions of the 503rd infantry were made the 3rd bde 101st ABN division at Ft Campbell KY. The 173rd colors were moved to Vencenza Italy and the 509th Airborne became the 173rd Airborne bde seperate.
A bit sketchy, but best available from memory atm.

Great outfit. Now stationed in Italy.

Well, it's a brigade, not a division. That means it's just part of another division.
