The inspiration: The lyrics of the song "For Whom The Bell Tolls" are based on the same titled Ernest Hemmingway novel, "For Whom The Bell Tolls" which is about an American who is given the job of taking out a bridge held by the Fasist army in the Spanish Civil War - the precurser to the World War II. He fell in love and then found out very disturbing things about life and death.
The subject matter: The song "For Whom The Bell Tolls" is about a scene of the Ernest Hemmingway novel where - one morning - five soldiers were taking a position on a hill and they get killed by an airstrike.
For Whom The Bell Tolls-Metallica Released: 1984
Make his fight on the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey On the fight, for they are right, yes, by who's to say? For a hill men would kill, why? They do not know Suffered wounds test there their pride Men of five, still alive through the raging glow Gone insane from the pain that they surely know
For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls
Take a look to the sky just before you die It is the last time you will Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery He hears the silence so loud Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be Now the will see what will be, blinded eyes to see
For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls

Metallica's new album "St. Anger" is released on June 10.. which is also the scheduled date for the release of Ann Coulter's new book. Could a day get any better?
As for the bassist situation. Earlier this month Metallica announced that Robert Trujillio (previously of Suicidal Tendencies, and Ozzy Osbourne's band) is now their bassist (yes, its permanent!!) Which is sort of ironic because former bassist Jason Newsted is now with Ozzy after a few failed endeavors with the bands Echobrain and (complete Metallica ripoff) Voivod.
On Metallica's "Jump in the Studio" section of their website (www.metallica.com) you can watch the posted videos from the studio.. view pictures and read about the daily happenings in the studio. The site chronicalled the recording of the whole album. It's in mastering and post-production now, and Lars has even hinted that the release date may be earlier than expected. I personally have heard a few song clips on the Jump in the Studio page and it sounds NOTHING like anything they've done previously... it's completely different from Load and ReLoad.. no blues this time.. pure metal.
Metallica will be hitting the road this summer for their Summer Sanitarium tour across the US. I have 1st row tickets for the show in Columbus, Ohio that a friend and I got through the official metallica fanclub. (www.metclub.com)

All the songs you mentioned are great songs, but what happened to Kirk Hammet's solos?
I remember when it came out, I was listening to it with a friend from my music theory class and we both thought the same thing. Yes, I was a music major at one time, I wish I remembered half of what I learned.

I don't know if Justice was the best, but it was definitely the last good one. Now, they just play radio-oriented

"Fade to Black" was the first song I ever learned to play the whole way through. Metallica is a large portion of the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place.
As far as musical inspiration goes, probably the best example is their classic "The Call of Ktulu," also on Ride the Lightning. Entirely instrumental, it is a setting to music of H.P. Lovecraft's book of the same name (though different spelling).

what happened to Kirk Hammet's solos? I must admit my ignorance to the individuals.....it was hard enough for me to remember who is/was the lead singer of ACDC.....(I know nothing, lol). I just like the group. And I never watch videos, so I never know who's singing.....now, back when the Beatles were playing, I, of course, could tell their voices apart, etc.

I actually like the "Eminem Show" album. I bought it. Old white guy listening to it must be funny to the teenagers, heh.
For my information...while I've only registered here at FR back in January, I've been browsing here since near after 9/11, how the heck are you quoting with Italics? HTML tags [i] don't seem to work. This place needs a FAQ. I use the USENET standard >> << but can't for the life of me figure out the FR standard. heh. Help appreciated.

"One", which I think was based on Johny Get Your Gun(???). Johnny Got His Gun
A good place to find this video might be your local library. That was the only place I could find it before I was online. I highly recommend it. I put it on one night at a party and it shut-up a bunch of coked-up blabbermouths, that is how powerful a film it is.

"I think their Black CD is just the best....Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam and especially the Unforgiven....great songs."
Let us not forget "Nothing Else Matters" off the Black one.
My personal favorite (song) is "Master of Puppets". I own every CD up to and including Black. Justice seemed lame to me. They've now become a little too FM, each CD more "produced" than the last.
That being said, I still think the worst Metallica is better than the best of the other $hit in todays disgraceful music world.
Another group who's old stuff I like ALOT is Iron Maiden. Their Killers album is still one of my favorites of all time.

Metallica is as good as any Rock and Roll band EVER! I can't say "Better" only because there are just too many great ones. But they are certainly as good.
Anyone who likes Rock and Roll but considers Metallica something less than worth their time should reconsider and do themselves a favor by checking them out. You won't be sorry.

don't forget to put the slash in after whatever you want italicized to end the italics, i.e.:
< > </ > with "i" between carats.
I can't illustrate properly on here because when I do, "I" Disappear : )

Listen to the interlude (starts at 3:30 minute point) in Master of Puppets that leads into the solo (solo starts at 5:42) and you'll hear what I mean.
Same thing with Ride the Lightning, At 2:37 into the song Hettfield's laying down the rhythm but Hammet is the one with the melody, it gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.
I can't remember which song it was, but Hettfield got mad that he didn't get credit for an incredible solo he did, hell it might even have been on Master but I think it was One.

Italic: letter "i" between open and closed < > Thanks. I get it now. They don't use the close tag I can write HTML in my sleep and couldn't for the life of me figure out why it wasn't working. heh.
