Seems to me someone should start checking to see if this
virus or whatever has been man made (produced) and distributed on purpose starting in China.......to be carried......

But SARS could become an issue with AIDS activists because it seems it would be more likely to attack someone with a compromised immune system, as those with AIDS.

I read this was first identified in Western China. Sounds like possibly a Biological Weapon that got away a little early. Caused by a Coronavirus, not treatable with antibiotics, just general support and wait for the body to gain control. potentially worse than anthrax. Hope I'm wrong, but this could get nasty.

I can think of some people being more susceptible than others. Not every one has died from SARS and all the doomsday reporting make it sound like the long heralded arrival of Captain Trips.

It's not Hong Kong that needs to close-it's OUR international airports that need to close to flights from Asia

What? Who will US corporations hire? US citizens? (sarcasm)

Thanks. We've wrestled with this decision for a while now. If things get worse by this coming Wednesday, we'll cancel. But after weighing all the reasons (for example, we're already in Taiwan, a country with over 100 cases of its own) we are "go" for now.

But thanks again for your thoughts!

"By the fall of 1918 a strain of influenza seemingly no different from that of previous years suddenly turned so deadly, and engendered such a state of panic and chaos in communities across the globe, that many people believed the world was coming to an end. It struck with amazing speed, often killing its victims within just hours of the first signs of infection."

Ebola is not a very sturdy disease.

SARS has already proven that it can travel on long international flights; that's how it appeared in Toronto. It is highly contagious.

Onve it spreads to hundreds of thousands and tens of thousands die, it may be too late to prevent a general worldwide outbreak.

I personally think this "disease" is way overblown in the media. Another one of those fears of the week. 53 dead in how many countries? Heck, ebola wipes out that many in some backwater African village in a few days.

I think so, too. Think about it--every year here in the USA we have normal flu outbreaks that kills hundreds of people per flu season and it doesn't get the attention that SARS is getting nowadays.

From what I read about the flu pandemic in 1918, that disease spread like wildfire due to the conditions of war (World War I) and also the fact back in 1918 personal hygiene was nowhere as good as it is today. Thanks to our modern medical knowledge, the spread of SARS is a lot less than it should have been despite the sensationalist reports from the Asian press.

Now, if SARS had suddenly killed several thousand people in a matter of days THEN we should have be concerned.

This is a virulent influenza, but certainly not the worst we've ever seen. Most people apparently respond well to treatment. Suppressed immune systems are more at risk than those of us who are healthy. Those people should take extra precautions.

If that turns out to be the case liberals will replace AIDS with SARS as the next politically correct disease to expend government funds upon.

And they'll find a way to blame Reagan for it.
