I dunno. A few years ago I walked into a Bank of America branch. While waiting for a teller, I noticed that the entire staff was 'oriental'. I commented on this to the teller, who became insulted. "We have an asian staff, sir," she said, very angrily. That was the first time I noticed that "oriental" had become a pejorative.

PC-ers also object to "Chinaman," which just happens to be a literal translation of the Chinese word for "Chinaman," "Jonggworen." "Jonggwo" = "China." "ren" = "man".

I don't object to being called an Irishman. I don't think Frenchmen, Welshmen, and Englishmen object either.

I think it's just a way of demonstrating power, to force people to change how they speak for no real good reason.

There was no mention of the CDC when I made that post. I was specifically refering to China. They initially participated in a coverup of this outbreak .. not making accurate reports of the numbers infected, and claiming it was NOT airborn, but only contageous via *droplets*. They certainly never informed people it was contageous through smoking, or that the virus could live 2-3 hours outside the body.

Smoking is PROFUSE in Hong Kong. One of the first things you notice about the people, when you go to Hong Kong, is that they have a cell phone on their ear and a cigarette in their mouth.

Yes IIRC, the Spanish Flu started in a Texas army base and spread to Europe as the troops were sent there. This is from a documentary that I saw, but it has been a while, the details are blurred now.

'Oriental' refers more to a style or descriptive thing, while 'Asian' is for people. (at least that is how my girlfriend says it is used now)

Isn't it amazing how the same people that are horrified at the thought of war casualities can accept unflinchingly the deaths of hundreds of thousands by disease (as long as it isn't a behaviorally self-inflicted disease) or the deliberate slaughter of unborn infants?
