BRITONS BACKING WAR
|
|
A large majority of Britons believe that war in Iraq should be seen through to a successful conclusion, according to a poll. Despite 23 British deaths and fears the conflict will drag on for months, just 11% of those questioned believe UK troops should be withdrawn.
The survey by ICM Research for the News of the World found 84% in favour of continuing war until its objectives had been achieved. Pre-war polls regularly found large majorities opposed to military action. But now it has begun, surveys have shown Britons rallying behind troops. The poll suggests Tony Blair has the support of 50% of the public in his handling of the Iraq crisis - five points down on a similar survey last week, but well up on his rating before hostilities commenced. Some 39% were critical of his stance. A majority - 58% - agreed with the Coalition strategy of seeking to minimise civilian casualties, which has been blamed over recent days for limiting the military effectiveness of Coalition troops. Just 19% of respondents said the conflict should be escalated, with full-scale assaults to capture the key cities of Baghdad and Basra, while 12% thought the Allies should adopt a "wait and see" policy of laying siege to the cities in the hope of Iraqi surrender.

NELL-OW RIBBONS |
OFFICIAL forces sweetheart Nell McAndrew pinned on one of our Yellow Ribbons last night, saying: "It's important to send that message to our troops that everyone's thinking of them." Sexy Nell, 29, has already made a British Forces broadcast to Our Boys via Virgin Radio. Today Virgin, on 105.8FM in London and 1215AM nationwide, will broadcast Mother's Day messages to troops in the Gulf between 10am and noon. |
GULF WAR II: Poll shows the British public are steeled for a long fight
84 per cent back war THE British public overwhelmingly back the wardespite fears that it could take months, not days, to depose Saddam Hussein. A massive 84 per cent believe Britain and America should see the war through to a successful conclusiona rise of two per cent in a week. Just 11 per cent think the coalition should now stop fighting and pull out. The figures are revealed in a News of the World ICM poll taken last night, well after US commanders confirmed the war will take months to complete. They show the population at home are now steeled to expect a long campaign. As for tactics, the majority57 per centsupport the current strategy of limited surgical strikes designed to minimise civilian casualties. Only 12 per cent believe the Allies should adopt a slower "wait and see" policylaying siege to major cities hoping for the Iraqis to surrender. Prime Minister Tony Blair is still enjoying the support of 50 per cent of the country with just 39 per cent disputing his stance. And the people delivered a humiliating blow to newspapers and TV channels which have been critical of the course the war has taken. Most of those quizzed58 per centsay the British media has a duty to support our troops in the conflict.

The Iraqi regime has peed in its own chili by showing the entire world just how brutish, evil and inhumane they are.
Even many previous anti-war leftists are starting to realize that we are engaged in a righeous cause.

So large majorities opposed this war but now 90 plus supposrt us now? I find that hard to believe. Don't lie to your self. If you believe in this war (which I don't) then do so- but don't lie about it like we did during the Clinton impeachment scandal.

That puts my heart into my throat. I hope these men come back alive and well and Saddam feeds a weed patch with his rotting carcass.

Dare I say that the Brits are once again finding a little bit of that feeling that once, many years ago, drove them across the globe to build an empire. When a good leader leads, people will follow regardless - that's what has happened here.

Tony Blair (and the Spanish and Aussie leaders, too) is a true leader. When people see that, and find that the evidence even slightly bears his judgement out, they follow.
ChIraq is a classic politician, as is Schroeder. These two are Clintonlike snakes who are the bane of a democracy. It is easy for them to be elected, but once there, they are a disaster because it is they who are followers - instead of raising up the people to a greater vision, lowering them down to the least common denominator.
