They may get permission to take off from the taxi strip.
It may be stipulated that the takeoffs must be done by professional type-rated pilots under good weather conditions, and with minimum takeoff weight (read: minimal fuel).
The plane owners will have to start looking at Pal-waukee to the north or Dupage to the west (both busy gen-av and corp-av airports). There's also Aurora and Will county (Joliet) but those are getting pretty far away. Oh, and there used to be a little strip in Elgin, but they turned it into a shopping center or some such fool thing. Pity, that. (Watch City native <]B^)
Still, nothing will ever come close to Meigs for those destined for the Loop, Soldier Field, or McCormick Place.

controlled 6am to 10 pm, I believe, ATC at the tower for the over city stuff, O'hare & midway controllers are way over worked - in fact I was told today flight following was run out of the Meigs tower, not sure if that is true, but if it is.....

Was an "environmental impact" assessment done prior to the bulldozing of the runway??
Sounds like federal lawsuit material to me!!

Perhaps Daley know where Hoffa is!
That's Rachel A. Goodstein.

I'd have to check that for sure, my AFD's are at home & I'm at my office, going off memory there

Go to
the Adler Planetarium site and click on the "sky eye cam" link on the right. You can control the direction the camera points (although I think it just electronically picks out the part of a near-realtime stored panorama image to send you). During the day, you can see the "X" cuts across the runway.

its a land grab.Considering Daley's history with Meigs one would think that. But to go in there in the wee hours of the morning with buldozers and shovels and start tearing the place up??? Daley has clearly lost his mind!!! He needs to get professional help.
He's ruined Soldiers Field, Millenium Park is still unfinished and WAY over budget and now this?!?!? He's nuts. He's lost it. He's wacko! And it's quite frankly, a little frightening to think that he would do this.

IF Daley had a legitimate reason for his actions, he would not have done it under cover of darkness. This criminal has just exercised his tyranical dictatorial powers yet again.
How this man remains in power completely escapes me....

Not only that...I find it suspect (at best) that he would do it RIGHT after an election in which he was just re-elected for 4 years....he's betting on the Chicago Voter's ever-short memory.

"To do this any other way would have been needlessly CONTENTIOUS and jeopardize public safety"
Yeah, we can't have that pesky DEBATE about it. It's much more EFFICIENT to do it the autocratic way. Funny, wasn't that supposed to be the strength of the soviet union?

Typical of Daley's "management style. He thinks he rules all of Illinios, not just Chicago. He sends his police out to attempt "straw man" purchases at gun shops *outside* the city of which is, regretfully, mayor. Completely outside of his jurisdiction.

I am deeply saddened.
Chicago is like a minature Iraq.
Everybody is under the thumb.
