I think the audio quality of Bose products are good...it is the price/value points that make them undesirable in my mind. There are cheaper systems that sound as good or better. Their "acousti-mass" subwoofers are way too expensive for the bass performance they advertise as compared with the price point/value points of their competitors.
For that matter I spent 75 dollars for a Radio shack dual channel 8 inch subwoofer, cross overs and a sturdy cardboard "forming tube"(the kind you pour concrete into) and built a subwoofer from a design inspired(okay "borrowed") from the sub-woofers at Hsu research. I used a sealed acoustic design and mathematical design formula from a speaker builder book. Audibly, to my tastes(I prefer a clean low Q bass, not augmented as I listen to much classical music) the performance is much like the multi hundred dollar subs(I do hope to add a separate bass amplifier so I can fully utilize the .1 channel on my 5.1 multichannel system) I hear at the stores, especially the Bose systems.

My guests when looking at my cheap mini speakers always ask where the big bass is coming from! I don't claim 16 cycle bass.... the mathematics and my ears tell me that bass resonance is around 45 cyles based on an open air bass cut off of 30 cycles(down 3 db of the main measured response curve)...but the great thing about a sealed acoustic design is the bass drop off is much more gradual than bass reflex designs. So I get usable bass down into the lower 30's or so... at least I can hear bass pedal organ fundamental in the 32 cycle range(the digital recording of the opening of Also Sprach Zarathustra, with an incredible organ rumble at the beginning). Someday I'll get a 15 inch dual channel subwoofer and build a larger enclosure(Hsu influenced again)!

I have too many Mac-specific programs. MovieFlow, Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, PageMaker, InDesign, etc.

I have most of those versions in PC format, too...and they aren't as good.

Yup, that's true. I get a kernel panic about once every three days...far less than when I was running OS9, but still...

'course, I prolly push it too much. I work with graphic files 400-600 megabytes, while placing images in PageMaker, InDesign and Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Flash, all at the same time, and even though I've got a gig of Ram, I still shouldn't push its multi-tasking that much!

I just installed a home theater in a room built in the basement and wanted to keep the room clean and the sub hidden.

Since I was placing it outside the room (under an adjacent stairway) I wanted a sealed cabinet design so I didn't lose any energy out of a rear (or down-firing ) port and pump the stairway full of bass.

I slid the cone up to the a hole I cut into sheetrock and glued the cover on the other side.

I had forgotten how GOOD a sealed acoustic woofer could sound.
Wonderfully smooth.

I used a sub from AtlanticTechnology.

LOL....after years of that being the "unofficial" slogan, Bose has now made it "official"

I installed a Bose system for a customer and they now pack a letter in their box entitled "Our Commitment To You".

From the first paragraph:

We take great pride in designing each of our products with the goal of producing the highest musical performance in the price range of that product. We strive to reproduce the musical sounds as closely as possible to those of the original performance. And we strive to avoid flashy sounds such as those associated with accentuated bass and/or treble frequencies. While those sounds may be initially attractive to the novice they are not real and are not enduring.

I purchased the Bose Accustic Wave when it first came out - must have been 15 or so years ago, and it still sounds fantastic. Never any distortion - no matter how loud you crank it. It even sounds great outdoors.

I'm glad I bought it back then, when it was only $650. Now they cost $1,200.

Is that the one that's slightly bigger than the Wave Radio? Our Wave is - let's see - about a foot wide, maybe eight inches deep, six tall.

Mine's the larger one. About 16 inches wide - 6 deep and 12 high. It has a nice carrying case, too.

Yeah, it's amazing that MIT, which consistently leads the nation's universities in D.O.D. research funding, allows some American hating POS to continue to profit from it. This goes for that whack job professor of linguistics noam chomsky, another fine piece of work!!

I used to work for a retailer and through contests won 4 different Lifestyle systems. Gave three away and did hook one up for our home theater. Personally I don't like the sound, I really don't like home theater, but the remote is easy for the family to use. I have separates and one set of good speakers for my use. Not a high, high end audiophile but even the most average person can hear the dead sound of a Bose speaker
