False alarm; not SARS; passengers dismissed.

I'm pretty certain that people coming from "SARS" countries are being screened pretty well
Not neccessarily. A Fijian rugby player was supposedly screened on return from Hong Kong and is now a suspected SARS case. The airport in Fiji isn't a very big. I hope they're doing a better job in the US at all with all the big international airports.

That's everyone's fear, m'friend. But how, exactly, is this spreading like wildfire? China has had the most cases...about 1,000 cases total, or less, in a country of 1 billion people, over six months. Over half the states in the US haven't seen one case. No place in Canada outside Toronto seems to be having serious problems. I just don't see this becoming some huge, world-threatening thing. It's a nastier flu, not a STAND-like superbug. Ifs don't scare me, only realities.

Oh boy I didn't know that. They surely donot speakmuch about it. I am glad I don't use aspirin. I guess someone does not want to go out of bussines.

Hope your right, but I do not put much faith in the Chinese numbers? I don't fully trust the HK numbers to be honest.

Obviously you can't do it now.
However, it would have been possible back when AIDS was first discovered as a deadly disease.
Even if you couldn't quarantine them all, implementing some kind of quarantine program would have gotten the message across earlier and saved many lives.
The problem was, the gays were already lambasting Reagan over his stance on gay rights. If he had tried to quarantine, they would have depicted it not as an effort to save lives, but some kind of gulag action.

A better question is, if we can quarantine for gonorrhea, what's Madonna doing running loose? :)

Had Jimmy Carter done that when AIDS and its means of transmission was first identified it might just be a footnote by now...

Wow. That certainly doesn't look good considering so much is still unknown.

You are comparing the flu stats which are hard data to the unknown. What per loin shows is only partial info.

Got it, VC !
Where do we get to be quarantined? This has possibilities :~)

No cure for AIDS.. SARS on the other hand can be cured through rest and with the aid of current medicine.. the body will fight it off. You can't quarantine someone for the the rest of their life.

Worth repeating.
To: kattracks
Everyone does realize that the death rate of SARS is only about 3% right?
But if you really need something to get worked up about, go ahead....
To: mewzilla
Are they differentiating between confirmed and suspected?I don't think so. I think the more useful terms are probable and possible.
The possibles are people who start exhibiting symptoms after being in contact with someone who either is confirmed or suspected of having SARS.
To: Chad Fairbanks
I hate to sound ill-informed (no pun intended)
But doesn't the standard influenza have a similar mortality rate?
