[history]
ONCE A YEAR, like migratory birds, the five of us arrive at Point Reyes National Seashore for a three-day reunion. We take over a small inn, leave behind husbands, children and challenging careers. We take long hikes, eat leisurely meals and talk interminably about our families and work.

Me, I keep thinking about
The Big Chill...
What is it about college-educated, non-veteran Americans born between 1945 and 1954 that makes so many of them such self-absorbed, narcissistic whiners?

LOL: Bay Guardian with a sports page.
These Now Nags are truly boring and self-righteous. No doubt their eyes stayed locked on their navels and they all got lost on the way home in Baghdad by the Bay.

Ponderous, friggin' ponderous...
Anyone who can read more than three or four sentences of such crap should do ten push ups and take a cold shower. Any one writing such crapulous drivel should undergo shock treatment for some time until they get their mind right and then publish a fitting apology.
Seriously

YAWN!
"...We used to stand for something (if only in our own minds), now we just sit around in a narcissistic haze and find things to feel guilty about. It is a time for questioning what it all means, examining our transitions and finding new things to wring our hands over next year..."

"Things have never been this bad in our entire lives," one of us says. Heads nod in agreement. Educated beyond their wits. High status jobs beyond their merits. Upper middle class salaries. Plenty of leisure time. And a Republican President.
Life is hell.

Such a pretentious, self-absorbed commentary. Concerning a pretentious, self-absorbed weekend, at that.
Ruth Rosen should be embarrassed by wasting her readers' time. And her publisher's money.
But I doubt she's capable of embarrassment...

One of us has been a president of a college and a major foundation. Another is a professor and an author. One is an exceptional editor; still another heads a prestigious private school. I am a historian turned journalist. What matters to us is the state of the world, not the status any of us have achieved in it. Heh.... Status doesn't matter to her, but she sure goes out of her way to point out how high the status of herself and her group is.

Hey my mother was in college during the Vietnam war, my brother who is now in the Marines does no think this way. This article about a bunch of rich pompus rich woman with nothing to do but hang out and discuss their boring days in college. My mom who has a masters in education does not believe the way these Hillary wanta be's.

We've worked here and abroad to end poverty and promote world peace. We've fought for racial equality, women's rights, environmental justice and universal health care Utterly inconsistent moral grounding. If they cared about those issues, they would be for or at least torn with regard to the war in Iraq and what it means for the population there.
Nope, their only issue is the Republican President. Total frauds.

Liberals are the epitome of self-absorbed, shallow narcissism. They have about as much substance and depth as a cardboard cutout. These are people who write out a $100 check to their favorite charity and then ride a limo to a cocktail party to spend the evening impressing each other with empty witticisms, and actually think they've made as important a contribution to humanity as Mother Theresa. If they ever became the slightest bit conscious of how utterly pathetic they are, they'd commit suicide from the shame.

We've fought for racial equality, women's rights, environmental justice and universal health care. These are the bonds that brings us back each year. These are the core values in each of our lives, regardless of our different religious beliefs and practices. Translation: "We support abortion-on-demand, and we pad that agenda with a couple other meaningless causes." And, of course, we're getting "spiritual" these days because it has occurred to a couple of us that we are probably going to hell.

What is it about college-educated, non-veteran Americans born between 1945 and 1954 that makes so many of them such self-absorbed, narcissistic whiners? I'm not sure but what's great is that going into their sunset years they will witness all that they attempted to impose on us rejected by younger generations. In addition to that they will realize that their partents were right. HA!
To: MikalM
What matters to us is the state of the world, not the status any of us have achieved in it.
... And GW Bush has done more to change that world for the better in the last two weeks than any of these poseurs has done in her whole phony, navel-gazing life.
