U.S. says its forces also enter Baghdad from north
AS SAYLIYA CAMP, Qatar, April 8 (Reuters) - U.S. forces have pushed into Baghdad from the north as well as from the south, and have captured an airfield in the southeast of the city, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.
Brigadier General Vincent Brooks said that the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force had captured the Rashid airfield some five km (three miles) from the city centre after moving into the Iraqi capital from the southeast.
In recent days, U.S. troops have pushed into the centre of Baghdad from the south of the city. Brooks said U.S. forces had also moved in from the north.
He said U.S. special forces in the north of Iraq were preventing Iraqi troops moving towards Baghdad or Tikrit, powerbase and birthplace of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
"In the north, coalition special operations forces in conjunction with Kurdish forces...are maintaining pressure on Iraqi forces while preventing their movement towards Tikrit or Baghdad," he said.
