Oh, Shirley! We love you. We really, really love you (Georgia Senate Poll)

This should get some Democratic tongues to wagging.

Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin leads either of two Republican congressmen, Johnny Isakson and Mac Collins, in a statewide poll released Thursday by EMILY's List, the women's political fund-raising organization.

In a hypothetical match with Isakson, who has declared for Zell Miller's Senate seat, she has a 45-38 percent advantage. She holds a 45-35 lead over Collins, who has not declared. That's even though the same 46 percent of those same voters say they would generally prefer a Republican in the Senate race, compared with 40 percent preferring the generic Democrat.

The poll of 800 likely voters was conducted by the Feldman Group, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent. The survey was conducted March 10 to 14.

Key to those good numbers: a 70 percent favorable rating in the Atlanta media market, and 79 percent in Fulton County.

"Franklin's principal advantage is her personal popularity in the Atlanta media market, where she wins 52 percent of all voters and 42 percent of white voters, well above the percent predictable by partisanship. Her popularity in the Atlanta suburbs, traditionally part of the Republican base, gives Franklin the potential to alter the partisan equation that might otherwise make a Democratic victory more difficult," the Feldman Group memo says.

Franklin's favorable-unfavorable ratio in this poll is 52 percent to 9 percent. The same figure for others is:

The Mellman Group is a Democratic polling organization, but these polling numbers should be looked at. Nevertheless, I think the numbers are bogus. Where is Governor Myrth York (D) of Rhode Island? I think her "advantage" is due to her being recognized as the mayor of the largest city in the state.

EMILY's List !?! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!! We have nothing to worry about here. This column should've been put under the humor category. I think some of those polled thought they meant BONNIE Franklin, the mother on "One Day at a Time."

This is the Feldman Group, not Mellman. The only poll I had from Feldman in 2002 was in Colorado, for Allard/Strickland and a Dem ballot initiative. During the summer it had Allard leading by one point while other polls showed an 8-12 point Allard advantage.

Regardless of its obvious left slant, it's still the only poll I've seen on this race. I agree with you on name recognition for Shirley. The generic preferences (46-GOP, 40-Dem) sound about right given GA's recent history. This is the first of what I suspect will be many polls in this high interest race.

I like how they didn't release the results of Franklin vs. Kingston. C'mon, they poll vs. Isakson and Collins but not Kingston? I don't think so!

Emily's List is so far in denial it's ridiculous!

You're presuming they even polled on Kingston. I see nothing to indicate they did.

Does anyone really believe that President Bush's approval rating is only 64% in GA? LOL!

I shall quote myself: "C'mon, they poll vs. Isakson and Collins but not Kingston? I don't think so!"

I think they must have had some indication that Kingston would be the strongest Republican, whether from this poll or previous data, and didn't want that to come out, otherwise why poll for Collins but not Jack? If anything, Kingston has been mentioned MORE OFTEN than Collins in speculation.

You forgot a key part of your quote. :-)

Read it all together and it makes perfect sense. Either they didn't poll vs. Kingston because . . . ??? (speculating they knew he'd be stronger) or they DID poll vs. Kingston, which is what I suggested, and didn't release the data because it wasn't good.

Any further explanation needed? Am I leaving anything out? Care to nitpick further?

Hm, yes, getting back to politics:

"Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin will try for a second term in office when it comes time to run again in 2005.

The first female mayor of Atlanta made the announcement [last] Tuesday in response to a question at a forum held by the League of Women Voters.

Asked if she had political aspirations for some other office thereafter, Franklin responded: "Whoa, I can't imagine that.""

EMILY's List poll is based solely on name ID. Franklin will have a hard time winning the votes of white rural folks in Middle and Southeast Georgia. These Yellow Dog Democrats can't bring these themselves to vote for an urban black liberal.
