>>The data suggests that cockroaches are an alternative vector.<<

Thanks for the heads-up on the info, Diogenesis.

"Think of all the E.coli on that handle from ignorant saps who just wiped and then didn't wash. Yuck."

The most frequently detected contaminant on public computer keyboards was human feces. (Yes, this is from a large study)

Haven't you heard? We are the plague that threatens the "biosphere".

Ronin, that was my point. Environmentalists are against GM food because it increases crop yield, against pesticides because it leads to more food available, and would doom millions of third worlders to death by malaria and trypanosomiasis by banning pesticides for vector control. They already have, for that matter.

Efforts to contain SARS may be hampered by "environmentalists" who read The Population Bomb and Earth in the Balance.

If cockroaches are deemed to be the vector, cockroach control measures may be tied up in court for years, in favor of "integrated pest management" schemes that city dwellers will be forced to use, and have not worked yet.

I pray that this does not develop into a major plague- we are not prepared to fight it.

Valid opinion, it makes me laugh because I'm careful too (but not OCD-level yet). But we have to see how this new situation develops. Maybe next year we'll all be carrying alcohol gel everywhere with no second thought.

When my friends from Germany came to the U.S. for a tour, they were shocked at everyone's preoccupation with germs. We told them that they should also be worried because they were going to go back to a country called Germ-many. ;-)

Another word to the wise is to place a few of those plastic seat covers INSIDE the toilet (on top of the water) in addition to the seat itself. Its buoyancy acts as a "pillow" of sorts and prevents the nasty backsplash that always seems to perfectly land "where the sun don't shine." NASTY to think of the contaminated water from people with who-knows-what-disease (AIDS, SARS, botulism, you name it) that's finding its way to your insides!
