BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. Marines seized control of the center of Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit on Monday after battling diehard loyalists, al-Jazeera television said.
Jazeera broadcast live pictures of U.S. Marines walking through Tikrit and U.S. tanks taking up position in a central square.
Its correspondent in the city, Youssef al-Sharif, said: "Tikrit is totally under U.S. control and they are talking with tribes to control the city and take out all pockets of resistance."

Has the USMC ever operated this far from the Navy? Looks to me that the Corps has won a big battle in the 5 sided puzzle place.

And the 4th Inf. Division turned out to be unneeded. So much for the nervous nellies who chittered we could never win this shebang.

Its coming in to provide reinforcement and replacement for existing troops. We won a war with a military force a quarter the size of the one in Desert Storm and we're still pinching ourselves quite trying to believe its real.

WWI Belleau Wood?
During the Boxer Rebelllion in China they were quite a ways upriver towards Peking.
Those come to mind pretty quick.
The Puzzle Palace has tried several times to get rid of the Marine Corps. When they couldn't do that, they tried to limit participation on all levels. That seems to have changed recently.
Contemporarily, the Marine Corps has become more of a special operations force in readiness.

That's interesting, about the Boxer Rebellion I mean! One of my Grandpas was in that conflict. But he was out of the service by the time of WW1. I read about that battle in the VFW magazine several months ago. I showed it to my mother(that grandpa was her dad), and she was telling me about him being in it.

Remember the "Halls of Montezuma". Mexico City is fairly far inland. Chosin Reservoir comes to mind and the first Gulf War saw the Marines maneuvering fairly far inland.
Iraqi Freedom though has to be the furthest projection of US Marines from the coast. It's interesting watching AAV's moving 400 miles inland.

Where is the 4 th ID? On it's way to Syria . . . I hope. Wishful thinking (sigh . .)

Has the USMC ever operated this far from the Navy? That's a good question. I can't think of a time.
Looks to me that the Corps has won a big battle in the 5 sided puzzle place.
When you look at the casualty lists, there are a disproportionate number of Marines there. They are a pretty tough group. I certainly would want to get into a fight with them.
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
i was thinking, wouldn't it be closer for the navy to pick up the marines on the coast of Lebanon? of course they would have to go through Syria first.; )

LOL!
Makes sense to me, that would help them remember the Beirut bombing in Lebanon in the 80's!
