The number of hospitalized has dropped for the first time...doesn't include military hospitals as I recall--they don't report case numbers...and lo and behold, it's just in time for the import/export show taking place in two weeks (thanks to mabelkitty for pointing this out).

This is an absolutely stunning article.

Everyone who knows anything whatsoever about SARS should read it.

And at a military hospital, 40 SARS patients were said to have been moved to a hotel for the duration of the WHO tour, in an apparent attempt to deceive inspectors about the true extent of the outbreak.

I sure wouldn't have wanted to be staying at this hotel.

Soldiers tend to live in conditions where diseases easily spread. The 1918 Spanish flu is said to have started on military bases.

And got here from soldiers returning home from WWI in 1918

This is a bit off topic, but has any one here read a novel called "The Black Death" by Gwyneth Cravens and John S. Marr? It was published back in 1976 and tells of a wild outbreak of plague in New York City. The City is isolated in time to keep it from getting out, and then VX gas is dropped to kill all humans rats and fleas in the city. The interesting thing is that the gas is dropped on 9/11. The doctor who brought the disease to Hong Kong stayed at room 911 of the Metropole. And we all remember that other 9/11.

"And got here from soldiers returning home from WWI in 1918."

Actually, It started at an army base in Kansas and was spread around the world by the 'doughboys' going off to WW1. It is called the Spanish flu because the Spanish were the first to identify the virus.

It was first reported at Camp Funston in Kansas on March 11, 1918, but was in Guangdong in February, perhaps earlier.

That's the second article I've seen today that says the number of patients still in the hospital is 1005. I supect they get that figure by subtracting the 322 discharged from the 1327 admitted. But that ignores the 69 dead, unless Hong Kong has been including those dead in the discharged figure. If that so, my chart is overstating the number of recovered patients. There would then be 253 recovered to 69 dead, a ratio of only 3.7:1.

Someone in China says they are about to come clean. (They've said this before..)

China to admit far more SARS cases

Supposedly they will admit to 300 confirmed cases in Beijing, and 500 suspected cases. They will raise the number of admitted deaths to 73 (not clear in the article where the deaths were).

No word if they will update numbers on Guangdong, allow outsiders to inspect military hospitals, or allow free access to WHO personnel in Beijing and Guangdong.

Gotta go, back Monday.

In this country it is avaoiding bad publicity in hospitals that could be leading to the same kind of neglect if a radio interview last night of a patient in Virginia is to be believed.
