Bob Costas was whining like the girly-man he is about the Hall of Fame's decision to forego an invitation to leftist radicals Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon to appear in Cooperstown for a puzzling 15th anniversary celebration of the overrated movie 'Bull Durham.'

Not only have Robbins and Sarandon been anti-America political distractions, but were nattering nabobs of negativity regarding the Iraqi war.

Apparently, O'Reilly felt it was better to sit on the fence during the brief interview, while Costas, as usual, holds the belief that he is the High Priest of MLB Baseball, and for all of the rest of us to bow down to his God-like opinion.

But you know Hollywood -- they need even a baseball movie to have an "edge" (i.e. whores, transvestitism, and kinkiness) or else it's not taken seriously.

Maybe the Hall should have shifted gears years ago anyway by lauding a 'Field of Dreams' as the essential 'baseball film.'

I can just picture Tim and Susan, had they been asked not to get into anything political: they would have gone out of their way to be political.

Also, their followers would have probably descended onto the event to raise a ruckus in order to get themselves on the news.

Costas knows baseball, and one can appreciate that in him. But he knows nothing of politics, and when he tries to mix the First Amendment with baseball and golf, he's like a dumb A-ball pitcher throwing trash to a worn-out catcher...

Back in 1908, Theodore Roosevelt told the Republican candidate, William Howard Taft, that he ought stop playing golf, for it would offend western voters. Roosevelt said the game was an aristocratic diversion, an offense to "the people." Taft said hell no. In fact, he explained, nothing is more democratic than golf, for it is every man against only himself. Think about it. He was exactly right.

Taft was purposefully avoiding politics and sports. Roosevelt was doing the opposite. Roosevelt also ignored baseball. I don't know why, but I know he ignored it. He paid great attention to college football, making a political issue over a percieved violence of the game. As President, Taft took to going to baseball games, and the popularity of the game skyrocketed. From 1909 to 1912 attendance more than doubled, following the President's example.

Sadly, media fools like Costas manipulate popular culture. Costas has done much for the game of baseball, if only through his enthusiasm for it. Nevertheless, one wonders who is being more political here, the Hall of Fame, or Costas? The accusation is that the Hall was being political by cancelling the event in order to prevent the political associations of Robbins and whatzhername. That's dubious logic.

The decision was made, and a good reporter -- isn't that what Costas is? -- ought report on the facts and go forht with the reality. Instead, he chooses to inject politics into it, just as he did with his support for Burke's idiot 1st Amendment-busting crusade against golf.

Costas may rethink his position after the ratings are in for the Tim and Susan show. I hope no one on this forum plans to watch. We didn't need to see Michael Mooron spew his anti-Bush hate on the oscars to know he did it - we don't need to encourage Costie and his fellow travelers by adding to their ratings.

Bottom line? Bull Durham was a movie, in other words pure fiction. Tim Robbins is not now, nor has he ever been, a MLB baseball player. That fact alone is enough to disqualify him from speaking at the Hall of Fame.

MLB is real. The MLB president has an obligation to protect MLB from anyone who might tarnish the image of MLB. He did just that.

Robbins should shut his pie hole. He has absolutely no right to speak to an MLB gathering without the authority of the MLB brass. The brass said no, and for good reason.

I happen to agree with the Hall of Fame's decision, but I also happen to respect Costas' opinion. I saw the interview with O'Reilly (who is also on record as disagreeing with the decision to cancel Robbins' appearance). He had his reasons, well thought out reasons, and although I disagree with him........I can certainly understand his points.

What were Costas' points on the cancelation?
