Um...............given that this is the first modern science has seen of this disease, it's pretty safe to say that every individual death brings the the total to a "new high"

Short answer: it doesn't. That's the stat I've got my eye on ...

The headline should have conveyed that then. So much of this news/these stories are redundant *new* information needs to be specifically identified a little more clearly.
