WASHINGTON -- A conservative interest group unveiled TV ads Friday comparing two Republican senators to President Jacques Chirac of France, in hopes of shaming them into supporting President Bush's tax-cut proposals.
The Club for Growth is running the ads in the home states of Sens. George Voinovich of Ohio and Olympia Snowe of Maine. The ads criticize Voinovich and Snowe for opposing Bush's proposal to cut taxes by at least $550 billion over 10 years.
Both senators have backed a $350 billion tax-cut plan, saying larger cuts would drive deficits too high. The closely divided Senate could not collect a majority for a higher figure without their support, and voted last week for a $350 billion package.
The spots compare the senators' lack of support for the Bush plan to France's opposition to the war in Iraq. The ads feature a quick shot of Chirac, and later put images of Voinovich and Snowe next to footage of the French flag.

Makes sense. After all, there's no point in trying to shame Democrats!
On the other hand trying to 'stiffen the spine' of 'pubbies makes one rather large assumption....

Ads don't shame people. Their actions shame them.

I do wish John Kasich would challenge Voinovich for the seat.

Voinovich will go along with more tax cuts if spending is cut. So, cut out $200B from the budget in spending, and he'll sign on to a $550B tax cut.

Republicans haven't found any programs to cut since they took over the House in '95, what makes anyone think they will now?

I think both have said that they would support larger tax cuts if matched by spending cuts as well -- not an unreasonable position for Republicans to take.

Club For Growth is really starting to make more than a few enimies, and not just RINOs. Taking out ads to shame Republicans who happen to disagree with the tax cuts without spedning cuts is not going to accomplish anything, while at the same time, it is going to push Club for Growth further towrds the dog house because they are potentially putting the narrow GOP majority in the senate in danger.

Voinovitch and Snowe are not completely lost to good sense. Lincoln Chaffee is another matter. Bush should agree to spending cuts if that's what it would take to gain their support.

Half-a-tax-cut is better than none.
