WASHINGTON - Six members of Congress live in a $1.1 million Capitol Hill townhouse that is subsidized by a secretive religious organization, tax records show.

The lawmakers, all Christians, pay low rent to live in the stately red brick, three-story house on C Street, two blocks from the Capitol. It is maintained by a group alternately known as the "Fellowship" and the "Foundation" that brings together world leaders and elected officials through religion.

Actually I think it was Barney's roommate who was renting out rooms by the hour while Barney was at work.

"Privacy" is now redefined as "secrecy" by these anti-Christian bigots (and I don't have any qualms calling Barry Lynn an anti-Christian bigot, even though he purports to be a Christian; he clearly is not).

For as long as I can rememeber, the Washington Post has run room-sharing classifieds under "Apartments, rooms, houses to share."

So any bonehead with access to the Post could determine that $600 is just about market rate anywhere on Capitol Hill or in Northwest.

Here is an example from today.

"I'd pay $600 a month not to live in this place."

And is anyone trying to force you to live there?

The only thing that interests me about the National Prayer Breakfast is the $900,000 tab - that seems a hell of a lot for one breakfast. How can they possibly get up to that figure? Are the coffee cups made out of diamonds?

...but mostly it's more of an accountability group to talk about things that are going on in our lives, and how we're dealing with them."

Now this is refreshing. These men and women could definately use accountability once they're away from their families for extended periods of time.

I think that article was in Harper's, not The Nation, but I suppose The Nation could have had an article on the same topic.

Would they rather these guys buy half million dollar houses in the Burbs of DC and become 'planted' in Washington? Sounds like these guys are trying to live within their means as Congrassmen while keeping their homes in their homes districts. What a novel concept!

But you know those Christians; they're always up to something nefarious! ;o)

Alert the BATF and FBI. They have previous experience handling wacko religious groups.

Jeez, where was the Arizona Republic when Gary Condidit and his Congressional cronies were having the orgy de jour? God-fearing people freak the paper out, but not Congressional pervs who are a threat to the public and national security?

$600 per month per room in a $1.1 million place? Yeah, they are getting a price break.

Not necessarily. 1.1 million is not that big a house in the DC area. A modest 4 BR colonial would probably go for a half-million easily! If it is a 6 or 7 BR home, it will be valued at that much, and if the owners have had it a while, the rents would easily cover any mortgage and maintenance costs.
