China has reported 97 deaths from the flu-like virus and 2,158 infections. The global death toll stands at 236.

I very much doubt their numbers. When you take their numbers out of totals, the death rate is much higher.

Banning tourists does not have much impact unless other travel is also banned.

It does, however, make it much less likely that reports will leak out about what conditions are really like in the banned areas.

Did anyone else have a big "Hmmmmm?" come over them when SARS first came out and its largest outbreak was traced to China?

They don't want tourists in the countryside because the full extent of their bungling would be known to the world

This is serious - really, and not just series! If the Chinese government is finally showing this type of concern publicly, things must be pretty bad.

From an article in the online version of the London Times:

World Health Organisation officials believe privately that China is still hugely under-reporting cases. Despite promises of full co-operation, they fear that many more cases in rural areas are still not being reported.

The rest of the article was unremarkable, but here's the link for those purists who want links to everything quoted:

Beijing still reluctant to divulge Sars toll
