He did not even sign the order indicating to me that he may not understand the gravity of the situation. If quarantined patients must sign forms, and given reports the SARS virus can stay alive on inanimate objects for 24 hours, won't the papers (and possibly the pens) help spread the virus, too?

Yep, the doc is in denial. Sometimes people do that. Especially when reality is too painful for them to admit.
Seems like lots of posters on FR are in denial these days, too. It's a natural human reaction.
If/when SARS breaks out, the people making the most uninformed comments today will be the first ones to panic. Likewise, if SARS is put back in its box, they will crow about how SARS was no big deal, and they knew it all along.
