Quarantine!!! Thats it!! ARghhhhhh.. thanks!!
I know what your saying. Our country has done an excellent job of being on top of this.
Now that China and other countries like Vietnam ARE quarantining their suspected cases,.. it sounds like it is calming down. I sure hope so. Vietnam seems to be on top of it better than China, probably because they were more honest about it. If China had been more forthcoming, perhaps it would not have spread so badly.

And again, thanks for your reports. I really appreciate the work you do to help keep us informed.

Thanks. Judging from the careful wording of denials, and from other governments now disinfecting flights out of India, India likely has the beginnings of an outbreak going.

If it turns out that she is wrong and that the CDC was not listening to its critics, Gerberding and her colleagues should pay for their mistakes with their jobs. I say they should pay with their lives

Hong Kong is doing this right. I hope the world follows their cue. China however looks very, very dismal. I don't think I would want to be in Bejing a month from now.
Now if Toronto would just get their situation Totally under control I would feel like the light at the end of the tunnel was not a train.

Hong Kong is doing better, but still developing over 190 new cases a week.
China is mess, and likely to get very ruthless in attempting to clean itself up. Today they sealed off a third hospital in Beijing.
Malaysia and India seem to be the imminent danger spots.
To: Orbiting_Rosie's_Head
It is just being reported on the local 11:00 news that we have our first case here in Orlando at a downtown hospital. They won't say which hospital, but I'm guessing it is probably ORMC which is our largest. Patient recently traveled to Asia. We have a lot of Asian tourists as well as a lot of visitors from Toronto.

I should add that my previous post (109) are cases in OHIO. The information is from various sources including the local news. I don't have the documentation or links since the info came from various sources.

Ortleb makes a lot of sense. I agree. Thanks for pointing it out. It was one of the interesting and worthwhile comments on this thread.
However, a lot of this thread was devoted to some garbage arguments that have cropped up a lot lately. There are two basic arguments showing up in various cute forms in many SARS threads. Not only are they flawed, but some of them are straight from the darkest dungeons in the human soul. Hitler would be proud.
GROUP #1: The first argument, found in many various forms, is, "If it ain't killed anybody from 'round here, it ain't dangerous." If left at that it would simply be provincial and ignorant. But some posters have carried it to a much darker level. These posters loudly proclaim they are young and healthy enough to beat SARS, so why should they even care? Let the old and/or sick die. (Frees up resources, I guess. Hitler would be proud.) I hope these Freepers are not really as depraved as they sound.
GROUP #2: The second group thinks its clever to point out how many more people have died in practically every way imaginable compared to SARS. (They could have used the same "logic" to ridicule the power of nukes, too, especially in 1943. How many Americans have nukes killed? Flu kills more people every year than nukes ever did. Yada, yada, yada.)
I guess for these folks, the only news is local news, and the furthest they think ahead is Friday night.
Are the people in group #1 really so selfish, even evil? Are the people in group #2 really so shallow?
Maybe its late and I'm just cranky. Whatever. But I still can not see how ANYONE posting on this topic, on this forum, can fail to understand the concept of a pandemic. Nor can I understand how ANYONE who understands the concept of a pandemic can fail to understand how important it is to try to head one off before it gets going. Nor do I understand how ANYONE could possibly consider SARS to be a ho-hum disease if it breaks out.
Perhaps the answer is simply invincible ignorance, otherwise known as denial.
G'night, all.

Really well said. One more group that deserves mention is the group that states that any attention any of us pays to this emerging threat is the equivalent of panic.
I.e, if posters ask serious questions regarding SARS, then they are regarded as myopic doomsayers/chicken littles.
I'm grateful that the majority here are willing to discuss, reason, inquire, and share information.
To: aristeides
Maybe he has a point. Maybe a cheap shot.
BTW, Charles Ortleb, a novelist and former editor of the New York Native , a newspaper that served the city's gay and lesbian community and that investigated a link between pigs and AIDS in the 1980s, said that although he does not believe that HIV causes AIDS, he does believe that HHV-6 causes AIDS and is "swine in origin."
I would guess he likely pushes an agenda and not scientifically based criticism.

From the Orlando Sentinenl:
Orange may have SARS case
By Pamela J. Johnson | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted April 25, 2003
Florida Department of Health officials are set to announce this morning that Central Florida has its first probable case of SARS.
The Orlando girl who is less than a year old had traveled from China nine days before the onset of the virus, Bill Toth, an epidemiologist for the Orange County Health Department, said late Thursday.
The baby was admitted to a hospital in the Orlando Regional Medical Center system on Thursday. Her illness was not life threatening, Toth said, and the child was recovering rapidly.
"She should be able to go home soon," Toth said.
On Thursday night, county emergency workers were already being warned to wear protective gear when responding to cases where SARS symptoms were reported.
A SARS health alert will be stepped up from yellow to orange, which means that paramedics and other emergency workers must wear the protective gear, Toth said.
There are 14 suspected SARS cases and two probable cases in the state, including the Orlando girl. Suspected cases have a high fever and cough and have traveled to an affected area. Probable cases also have signs of pneumonia on a chest X-ray.

if people started avoiding areas they thought someone with SARS might have been, the businesses in that area would lose ALL of their customersHey, what's a few dead people, or people with permanently damaged organs? Got keep business up, you know. I believe we all have the right to know the details of the spread of this illness. And the insinuation that equals panick is insulting. It's better to know where the areas are so they the people who visited there might be contacted, also so people might avoid certain areas tempoarily. This is the easiest and fastest way to stop any possible spread. Keeping everything secret is the surest way to help spread the illness, ensuring a future panick. That's what the Chinese gov't did. They tried to keep it secret in the beginning, which helped spread the disease, which caused the current panick in Beijing.
To: Species8472
I suppose there is a reason you don't consider Alaska to be a State? It's not my list, it's from the CDC. States without reported suspect cases at the time the list was made are not on it.
To: _Jim
Have you been warned *not* to talk with the following people about this disease yet: your neighbors, the girl at the checkout in the supermarket, your co-workers, truckers on CB channel 19, your in-laws, other posters on FR?Of course not. The secrecy I'm talking about is the refusal of authorities to detail areas where SARS victims may have come into contact with others. By detailing early and widely, persons who may have been exposed can be informed, and any additional cases can be found. Steps can then be taken to prevent spread of the illness. If we do nothing now, that only contributes to the possible spread. Then you will have a panick. Calm dissemination of all information will inspire a calm response. Simply reporting increasing case numbers by authorities, with no additional information, will certainly cause panick. That's what they did in China. They even tried to conceal the numbers. This secrecy lead to an explosive spread, until the numbers got too large to conceal. Information spread word-of-mouth, in the way you describe, which contributes to exaggeration and inaccuracies, which in turn leads to panick. What the hell is wrong with people??? Don't they understand that by NOT DETAILING information, the authorities liable to CAUSE a real outbreak and panick rather prevent them?
To: Judith Anne
One more group that deserves mention is the group that states that any attention any of us pays to this emerging threat is the equivalent of panic. Good point. Even posting a SARS article is "fear mongering" to these folks. These people are also in denial.
Maybe Group #3 should be the "Ignore it and it will go away" crowd.

Of course not. The secrecy I'm talking about is the refusal of authorities to detail areas ... Detail areas - like what?
Specific offices, department stores, grocery stores, the buses or subways these people visited?
ARE we REALLY at that stage yet?
If YOU, in particular, have THAT much concern perhaps it is YOU who should isolate yourself from exposure to society or purchase and wear suitable face masks.
SO FAR, if you've kept up, read and digested the information available the persons in the US who have come down with SARS are those persons who visited and returned from China - and you want detailed those persons EVERY move?
DON'T you think that PERHAPS the cognizant health officers where these people reside are BUSY backtracking and following-up where these persons could have potentially spread this contagion?
The mere abscence of a highly publicised campaign on TV and on the radio DOES NOT MEAN a dedicated corps of health professionals are NOT active behind the scene monitoring the situation or even canvassing the streets as we speak soliciting information from the public.
We, today, in America I fear, are falling for the "if it ain't being talked about on TV our government is doing nothing" fallacy ...
