Former Iraqi Spy Chief Hijazi in U.S. Custody (another big fish caught)

Former Iraqi Spy Chief Hijazi in U.S. Custody Fri April 25, 2003 08:17 AM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Iraqi spy chief Farouk Hijazi, accused of plotting to assassinate former President George Bush in the 1990s, was detained near Iraq's border with Syria, said a U.S. official on Friday. "He (Hijazi) is in custody and was picked up in Iraq near the Syrian border yesterday (Thursday) Iraqi time. I have no more details about the circumstances (of his arrest)," the U.S. official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters.

Last week, Washington said it believed Hijazi was in Syria amid mounting accusations that Damascus was harboring members of Saddam Hussein's government who had fled America's invasion of Iraq.

Earlier this week, in a sign that tensions were easing between the U.S. and Syria, President Bush said Syria had taken some measures to seal its border. It was unclear whether Hijazi was captured with some Syrian help.

Hijazi was director of external operations for the Iraqi intelligence agency in the mid-1990s, when the agency allegedly launched a failed attempt to assassinate the first President George Bush during a visit to Kuwait.

Hijazi subsequently served as Iraq's ambassador to Tunisia and Turkey.

Hijazi is among several high-level Iraqis taken into U.S. custody over recent days. Also on Thursday, Tareq Aziz, Iraq's former deputy prime minister and one of the best-known figures in Saddam Hussein's old guard, surrendered to U.S. forces.

U.S. Central Command in Qatar and officials in Washington said that Aziz gave himself up to U.S. troops in Baghdad and was "under coalition control."

I think with the pressure on Syria that the price of safe haven for any Iraqi leader has at least tripled or quadrupled. Not all will be able to pay the price.

Just wild speculation on my part, but this guy probably knows which congresscritters were bought and paid for. There maybe some unexpected resignations for "health" reasons, in the near future.

Hijazi is known to have frequented Kandahar and was a supporter and enabler of OBL, having brokered aid of various types to al Qaeda. He's one of the most direct links between 9/11 and Iraq.

Syria blinked.

Muhammad Hamza al-Zubaydi - the Q-of-spades, was a HUGE catch!

On September 19, 2000, a year before WTC, and with CLINTON still president, the United States Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes David Scheffer said this...

We also caught HIS SON on 4/21/03, and I assume the apple didn't fall far from the tree. That, plus Saddam's goons are mostly retirement age, and Saddam only trusts family ties. Please watch for the son's name and rap-sheet.

Fox News reported last night that there are around 200 former Iraqi leaders and persons of interest on their "most wanted list." Those on cards are just the top of the heap.

whats the deal with Abu Nidal?

Apparently, Iraq tried to FAKE his suicide last August.

But when Ollie North's team captured Abu Abbas, they also found Abu Nidal [freshly killed].

Sounds like another Republican we've heard of..
Roosevelt steered the United States more actively into world politics. He liked to quote a favorite proverb, "Speak softly and carry a big stick. . . . "

Interesting item on Abu Nidal.

Ollie probably enjoyed reporting that piece of news. I heard that he and Nidal had a blood fued.

Iraq has never sponsored terrorists against US citizens, much less a US President.

There must be a mistake in this story.

Personally......I'd like to see both the Clintoons on the joker cards. Man it irks me that they walk around so smugly... with everyone knowing what crimes they committed.
