Two Border Patrol agents wounded Pair caught in cross-fire between rival gangs

A Laredo man was arrested and charged Monday with the attempted murder of two U.S. Border Patrol agents in a late Sunday night shooting in the Ladrillera neighborhood, at the 2400 block of Boston.

The shooting suspect, 18-year-old Jesus Arias, Jr., from the 3700 block of Pinder Avenue, was arrested at the 2300 block of Pierce by officers from the Laredo Police Department, Webb County Sheriff's Department and U.S. Border Patrol, backed by a Border Patrol helicopter crew.

The suspect, Jesus Arias, Jr., who was allegedly arrested in 2002 for vandalism, became a wanted individual overnight after he allegedly attempted to murder two U.S. Border Patrol Agents Sunday night at about 11:30 p.m. Border Patrol officials declined to identify the shooting victims.

According to reports, it was a Laredo Police patrolman who first recognized Arias, after the suspect's Oct. 2002 mug shot, was released Monday by officials, along with a warrant for his arrest, said Investigator Jorge Maldonado, with the Crimes Against Persons division.

The officer first gave chase to the suspect on foot, then requested the help of U.S. Border Patrol agents Monday afternoon, officials reported.

According to the investigator's reports, a witness at the scene then advised the patrolman of the location of the suspect.

Thereafter, a fleet of investigators arrived at the scene in the 2300 block of Pierce, and corralled the suspect with the help of several sheriff's department, Border Patrol and Laredo Police Department officials and took the suspect into custody.

Officials reported Monday they were unsure whom the residence belonged to and that the case is still under investigation.

The two Border Patrol agents remained unnamed, but a supervisor identified them as both 32. The agents were driving an unmarked vehicle, a white-colored F-250, when caught in a crossfire between two rival gangs Sunday, said Investigator Jorge Luna, also with the Crimes Against Persons division.

"They were at the wrong place at the wrong time," Luna said.

According to reports, one agent was shot in the right arm and the other received gunshot wounds to his upper torso.

The victims were allegedly shot at with an AK-47 assault rifle, which penetrated through the back of the vehicle and the car seats before they struck the two victims with great impact.

"No exit wounds were found on the victims," Luna said.

Both agents were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Only one was released Monday, officials said.

Authorities first detained a 13-year-old juvenile at 12:30 a.m. Monday. The main suspect, who was identified by witnesses as Jesus Arias Jr., allegedly fled on foot.

Authorities recovered the unmarked bloodstained Border Patrol vehicle as part of the investigation.

Arias was arrested Monday at about 5 p.m. and charged with two counts of attempted murder, a felony 2.

An extra charge for evading arrest, a class B misdemeanor will also be added, officials said.

The suspect was transported to Webb County jail, with a $500,000 bond for each attempted murder charge, as set by Justice of the Peace Hector Liendo.

Suspect Arias

Pictures of weapon, Border Patrol truck hit by gunfire.

They just sneak in to do the jobs Americans won't do.

Reporters are such maroons. The weapon is not an AK-47. It's a sawed off SKS.

It's all about agendas.
They'd much rather shape opinion than report events.

Bush doesn't blink to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to defend the borders of other countries, but doesn't give a squat about defending our very own. The exception is the Crawford Ranch -- and I quote GWB: It is his "little piece of heaven". Meanwhile, thanks to the illegal invasion and his defiant neglect, all other border residents have to put up with a "big piece of hell."

Guess we can't hurt other people's feelings. That's not what compassionate conservatism is all about.

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting with bated breath to hear Tom Ridge tell us what these "historical and cultural reasons" are that prevent Bush from refusing to protect our borders.

I think you have been spending too much time chatting and socializing on those "A Day in the Life of President Bush" threads! Shame on you...:^)

Ever notice that all the true konservatives totally ignore these never ending threads regarding the negative impact that results from this open border madness? Hehehe, it's glaring....

I'll take a stab at the historical perspective on this one, at least.

Look at this guys single eyebrow that covers the ridge of his forehead that protrudes forward enough to keep the rain off the tip of his nose.

He's quite possibly the 'missing link' between modern men and the Neanderthals, or is that troglodites? What right do our modern borders have to interfere with his trans-migratory patterns?

Somebody call National Geographic before the courts let him go.

Joe, All of you who comment on these related threads and share my disgust and outrage and concern for our country's future have become known to me (with regards and respect) as "Our Gang".

I can name 20 screen names in 5 seconds of those like us who are most likely to be found here...and also 50 other screen names in 5 seconds who would never, ever visit these threads, and who would be more likely to beat you and me with a cyberspace two-by-four for consistently "coming out" on this topic.

Like you, I notice that every time an anti-illegal alien, pro-America "FReeper" dares to criticize Bush's policies on one of the more "mainstream" threads, they are practically tarred and feathered...

Uncontrolled illegal immigration will destroy the US more surely and more thoroughly than any terrorist attack.

Gradual, legal, immgration with an emphasis on assimilation made this country great, but that era is past. The present situation will turn the US into Yugoslavia. Bush and the GOP are failing to address the greatest threat to this country and we have not found a way to make the GOP pay attention. Bush may lose the next election because a good portion of his base is so angry with him, but he is betting on the axiom that there is no where elese for these voters to go. He is mistaken. Even if there is no realistic third party alternative, many conservative voters will just go fishing.

And I know an excellent spot where 6 lb. brown trout are waiting, right around the first week in November.
