[history]
California moved a step closer Monday toward a quarter-sized defining image, as Gov. Gray Davis announced the five top designs to depict the Golden State on a two-bit piece.
The five designs will be fine-tuned by the U.S. Mint before the official California quarter is selected by Davis. The coin is scheduled to be issued in January 2005.

I like the first one - it depicts the sea of red ink that Grey Davis has inflicted upon California...

Does the "Largest living thing on Earth" in the bottom coin refer to the California Government?

Take a lesson from Alabama. We put Helen Keller on our quarter. I'm not sure if that means we want to be thought of as dead and blind or what?

I think the Gold Miner collage will win because it was the California Gold Rush that was a decisive factor in getting California admitted to the Union. Besides, this design also includes the California grizzly and the California poppy, both official state symbols.

Tell me about it. I picked up the quarter and my first thought was "What is this crap!".
All these other states with landmarks, racecars, rockets , etc .. and we have Helen Keller in her chair! UGH!
There are a lot of things I would have liked to see, but I would have even settled for MLK or a Civil rights thing over Helen.

Glad someone agrees. I was half afraid that I'd get flamed for being insensitive. I'd rather see Pat Buttram as Mr. Haney or Redstone Arsenal or World Record Bream or ....

I submitted one for Arkansas... it didn't even make the top one hundred. I think they didn't like the 'violent imagery' of a Bowie knife on it:

How about a bum with his hand out? It would symbolize San Francisco and the whole State of CA when it comes to putting the touch on the taxpayers in the rest of the USA.

I like that as a choice!
Can we sell enough to the rest of the US to pay off the 30+ billion debt Davis has racked up?

I think you're right, and I think it's the best choice, since it isn't a localized design. The Golden Gate Bridge is too limited in its locality, as is the waves and sun design. CA is not just a coastal state, it also offers towering mountains and deserts, along with the richest farm land in the world. The rest just don't do it for me.

How about an aborted fetus on one side and two men kissing on the other. Or maybe a man with his pockets turned inside out on one side and a tree sitter on the other. Let's show the REAL California.

Dang, I thought this was an "American Idol" thread.

has anyone checked over at Fark.com for a thread on this? They had one on the Alabama quarter that was hilarious!

The Yosemite Valley one gets my vote as it is the only one that is not cliche, (except the tree which is just stupid).

How about a picture of the Free Republic server? Let's show the REAL California.

I think the Gold Rush will win because the guy panning for gold represents the cal government going through the pockets of its citizens.
