I grew up in Florida. 9 foot alligators are not all that uncommon there. And we grew up learning to respect them for critters they are. There is a 'proper' humane way to handle a gator.

Once the gator was secured, it's just a matter of waiting for someone who knew how to handle one to come do it. It would appear that this warden was either unschooled in handling this problem, or didn't want to take the time to gather the proper help.

Either way, the gator would probably still be dead, but it wouldn't have that ugly, macho, trigger-happy feel about it.

If these people that are complain where to help the game warden haul the 9 foot alligator INTO the back of the pickup truck, then they can talk.

It sounds like a no-win situation for the officer as well as the gator. Where have all the stupid people come from? It didn't seem like there were so many when I was growing up. I must have led a sheltered life.

What is a 9' alligator going to way? Somewhere over 150 to upwards of 200 lbs?

Ahhh, that ugly, macho, trigger-happy feeling - how I miss it so. Although, that is not quite the reaction we get from women around here, when we dispatch a dangerous animal. They express a tad more gratitude.

I wonder what these people would be saying had this gator gotten ahold of a toddler.

"The game warden then took the alligator to the end of the street, and shot and killed it, authorities said."

Yeah, well, I suppose he should have carried the gator to the end of the street before plugging 'im. Would have been far more humane............................................ahem.

I would think they would have tried to relocate it

I agree, the professionals I saw trap a gator took it out of the neighborhood and later shot it in another location.

For the uninformed, the method used in this article was wrong. First, you need more than one person. You use a pole with a loop on the end to immobilize it. Then an experienced (and brave) person stands over its shoulders and duck tapes its mouth and legs. Once that's done it isn't a danger to anyone unless you're dumb enough to stand next to its tail. Then it is hoisted into the back of a truck and brought to a private location where it is killed with a shot to the back of the head.

I'm not a PETA freak

I'm not either. I don't have a problem with their killing the gator. But any time an animal has to be killed the least painful method should be used. Inflicting needless suffering is cruel and shows very poor character.

A Nine Foot Alligator!

People can be so Stupid...What's Wrong With Folks these days any way?

That woman in the Video Clip needs her Head examined.

What would have happened if that Big Gator was hungry, looking for something to Eat and it Grabbed one of the Children or "Adults" on the street?

I believe that the Game Warden did The Right thing.

He was alone, no help...and had a Nine Foot Gator to deal with and Stupid People standing around complaining.

Thank God that the Game Warden was Armed with a GUN!

*** Note to Fools and Stupid Humans...Don't Mess Around With A Nine Foot Gator...or You could become his...Snack!

What would they have had him do? Pick up a 9 FOOT gator and throw it into the back of his pickup?? Either that or shoot it right there and risk a richochete hitting the by standers.

If a Game Warden can't shoot well enough to kill a gator on the spot without danger of a ricochete, I expect him to resign in shame and leave the South.

I had to dispose of several nuisance gators when I lived between Houston and the coast, some legally, some not. If you are close enough to get a rope on him, it's just not that difficult.

This game warden was just plain stupid.

So9

That gator was racially profiled and dragged through the street like the man from Jasper Texas. He sould have had a chance to live and be place in a government ran home for gators.

Watch PETA say some of this nonsense.

This sounded like a job for you and your sword...

One problem: my sword is a shortsword - I'd need a broadsword at LEAST for that.

Now, my six-foot quarterstaff could have been very handy . . .
