But who on earth needs an assault weapon unless they're trained and under the command of someone with experience and accountability?Don't mistake my personal choice not to carry around my AR 15 everyday with the idea that the 2nd Amendment is part of a Bill of Needs. The Constitution does not qualify the right to keep and bear arms, it simply states that the right exists and cannot be "infringed"; as much as I am troubled that certain people have firearms who, in my estimation, are not playing with a full deck, in the absence of the commission of a criminal act, they have the right to own these arms. In my 30-odd years of living in California, I have only once seen a pickup truck with an AR in the back window rifle rack in public. I have however, seen many, many of these arms at both public and private shooting ranges. It is in my estimation, the best current Homeland Defense Rifle, and its ownership should be encouraged as a matter of national defense.

They sure would look kewl riding on a gun rack in the back window of your pick up truck. At least rifles and shotguns sure use to look good in Texas riding in a gun rack. Especially when the every day citizens were able to keep Charles Whitman penned down and unable to continue his killing spree. The cops guns couldn't reach the tower, the citizens guns could. That's the way I like it, and that's the way it should be.

One definition of politics is the art of the possible. Do you want a public stand or do you want the Assault Weapons Ban to just go away. I want the latter and I see this strategy as letting it go away and stay away. You are assuming a lot, or you have inside information?

...as much as I am troubled that certain people have firearms who, in my estimation, are not playing with a full deck, in the absence of the commission of a criminal act, they have the right to own these arms. If we were to cede validity to the idea that some people are too flaky to be allowed to own a gun we would also have to take a look at the mental stability of millions of people who are allowed to get behind the wheels of cars.
After all, only about 40% of all fatal auto accidents are attributed to alcohol perhaps some of the other 60% are caused by conspiracy theorists who can't take their eyes off of the rearview mirror!

I am making no real assumptions just recognizing that as of now there has been no direct statement from George W. Bush on this issue and this issue has a whole lot of history that will make it difficult to pass. Congress critters remember 1994 and what this issue did then. They know that if the assaukt weapons ban is extended between now and the election it will only help the Democrat party. They know that even safe congressional seats can be doomed by a vote to extend this ban.
I am also clearly stating that Congress critters should be innundated with letters from RKBA people. Yes, sending letters to the White House is also a good idea. The whole point is GWB made some statements in the 2000 campaign that he would support the AWB so now it incumbent to let it die a natural death. As I stated without Congressional action to extend the AWB it will expire on September 14, 2004. Everyone with a calendar can see that date is less than 60 days prior to the election. It is clearly in the interest of GWB to have the AWB expire then even though he supported the extension.
