How Do I Block Annoying Pop Ups?
FreeRepublic ^ | 5 May 03 | Self

Posted on 5/5/2003, 5:59:18 AM by SkyPilot

I apologize for the vanity post--but I need some Freeper help. About 6 weeks ago, my computer started going crazy with the dreaded "pop up" assault whenever I was on-line.

I noticed most of this happened when logged on to FreeRepublic--and it is those golden underlined words that someone purchased the "right to" that initiate it.

For example--the Bill Bennett gambling threads will cause all sorts of on-line gaming windows to appear--many of them quite graphics intensive. It can slow things to a trickle.

I have tried deleting cookies, cache, and history. I have tried blocking pop ups through AOL. They keep coming back.

Any help would be appreciated.

I installed AdAware on a machine at work. It detects software installed on your machine which might be the cause of some of the pop-ups you detest.

However, we all need a browser which can be configured to not allow the creation of new windows. This is where most of the pop-ups could be nipped in the bud. So far Mozilla is the only one with this capability of which I am aware.

'Spybot - Search and Destroy' took care of all my problems. You can download it free by finding the link on the FR link that I just posted above.

Hey, what the hell . . . . . I really didn't want to start a whole thread just for my little vanity question. Which goes like this:

"How come, when I view My Comments, wordwrap is turned off?"

In threads and everywhere else on FreeRepublic, wordwrap works nicely, but whenever I check My Comments, everything scrolls off to the right, making me crazy as I scroll back and forth.

I've checked settings and preferences everywhere I can think of. Help!

The easiest way I know to stop pop ups is to disable Java scripting. Simply click on 'tools' at the top of your screen, click on 'internet options', click on 'security', click on 'custom level' and then scroll down to 'active scripting' near the bottom and check 'disable'.

No more pop ups!

Thanks to all for the help--sheesh - you guys would put the Computer Help Desk at work to shame!

OK--very sorry to waste the bandwidth on this one.

Mods--if you need to delete the thread--please go ahead. If it helps us computer-geek-challenged, then leave it.

I installed 2 of the links you all suggested--and this thing is working like a charm.

Danke.

Is Word Wrap disabled in your comment box?

Also, while we are at it - the "More Convienent" "Convienient" and "Secure" log in system to Free Republic does not work for me---I have to log in my password every bleedin time.

It didn't used to be like that, and I have tried changing the settings--to no avail.

That happens to me whenever I post a wide picture. Once I have enough additional posts that the wide picture scrolls off the bottom of My Comments, then normalcy returns.

So hurry up and post a lot <grin>.

Actually, in looking at your recent posts, I don't see any such wide picture (the one of Buster the dog is surely small enough), nor do I see any problem myself with word wrap when displaying your posts.

So I've no idea what you're seeing.
