Andrea Lafferty, executive director of Traditional Values Coalition, said the measure would silence people of faith who wanted to speak publicly on moral issues."The purpose of this legislation is really to use federal law to force Americans to accept homosexuality," Lafferty said.
"It also will infringe upon people's freedom of speech and their religious freedoms. We're seeing this happen in Canada, where pastors and other people cannot say that homosexuality is a sin. That is now considered a hate crime, and that is exactly what's going to happen here in the United States," she said.

You mean we have laws that say it is ok to hurt people based on their sexual orientation? Gosh, I thought laws covered everyone - guess I was wrong all these years, sheesh!

So, now Arlen Specter is a liberal Republican? Since he's being challenged in the primary I thought he was in "conservative" mode. Someone ought to cut this out and save it for the primary voters.

Okay, Cicero took my Arlen comment, so I'll defend GORDON SMITH, who's generally a good conservative with only a couple caveats like this.

Ted Kennedy should be excommunicated.
That said, this disturbs me..
We're seeing this happen in Canada, where pastors and other people cannot say that homosexuality is a sin.
If this happens in the USA, I may have to ask my fellow sympathetic FReepers to help bail me out of jail. There is NO WAY they are going to tell this Deacon what he can and cannot preach about.
BTW, Poly, as a fellow Catholic and brother in the faith, I blame the Bishops for the situation we now find ourselves in. They have been spineless (mostly) in protecting the faith against the attacks of the Kennedys, Dashles, Reeds etc. We WILL suffer persecution over their SLOTH.
To: Polycarp
Any law seeking to punish criminals seperately for their MOTIVE is stupid, and WRONG! These laws are so difficult to prosecute anyways...

1)Homosexuals, as a demographic group, have, by far, the largest amount of discressionary income ("poopin' around money")of any group in the United States.

This will in fact, elevate faggots to a level above others. So-called Hate Crimes legislation creates special classes of people who are beyond reproach.
So much for the republic.

Pat Toomey for Senator.

We WILL suffer persecution over their SLOTH.Why will we suffer persecution over thier sloth? I know life isn't fair, etc. etc. but haven't we suffered enough vis-a-vis Vatican II?

An inflammatory statement not supported by facts.
To: Polycarp
Now they need special laws?
Whine and complain and meet a Kennedy and you too can have your very own laws.
Appearantly, the laws that apply to the rest of us just aren't good enough.
To: Desdemona
The timing of this is interesting coming on the heels of the Rick Santorum comments. I am anxious to see how he reacts to this bill and, also, how he votes.

They have been spineless (mostly) in protecting the faith against the attacks of the Kennedys, Dashles, Reeds etc. We WILL suffer persecution over their SLOTH.Oh...but...but...they published that wonderful orthodox defense of Catholic teaching on homosexuality in "Always Our Children." (/sarcasm)
Cardinal Ratzinger and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in 1990, enumerated the definitive church teaching on this issue, with a document entitled "Some Considerations Concerning the Catholic Response to Legislative Proposals on the Non-Discrimination of Homosexual Persons." Paragraph 9 of this document states:
``In assessing proposed legislation, the Bishops should keep as their uppermost concern the responsibility to defend and promote family life'' (no. 17).
Furthermore, under "Applications," Paragraphs 10 and 11 of the Document states:
10. ``Sexual orientation'' does not constitute a quality comparable to race, ethnic background, etc. in respect to non-discrimination. Unlike these, homosexual orientation is an objective disorder (cf. ``Letter,'' no. 3).
11. There are areas in which it is not unjust discrimination to take sexual orientation into account, for example, in the consignment of children to adoption or foster care, in employment of teachers or coaches, and in military recruitment.
Guess the US and UN will soon be locking up Cardinal Ratzinger for HATE CRIMES.

Again, referring to the 1990 document, "Some Considerations Concerning the Catholic Response to Legislative Proposals on the Non-Discrimination of Homosexual Persons," Paragraph 16 states:
"Finally, since a matter of the common good is concerned, it is inappropriate for Church authorities to endorse or remain neutral toward adverse legislation even if it grants exceptions to Church organizations and institutions. The Church has the responsibility to promote the public morality of the entire civil society on the basis of fundamental moral values, not simply to protect herself from the application of harmful laws (cf. no. 17)."
Those Bishops who have sat silently by or supported homo rights bills should be removed (at a minimum.)
More than likely, those same Bishops who have sat silently by or supported homo rights bills also protected homo pederast priests.
