Well, my wife is a non-union, non-NEA teacher and it is pitiful how little they are paid and how many kids each teacher must manage.

While I generally oppose the NEA and I am for tax cuts, it is only prudent to ensure that we aren't doing further damage to the school system as we implement tax cuts. The public school system is broken and desperately needs repair, not necessarily in the form of more money but still we need to ensure that the tax cuts don't drive off the remaining good teachers...unless we all plan to homeschool as a nation :) Flame suit is on.

Ah yes, the NEA: a repository for the "gimme gimme gimme" mentality among those who purport to be educators.

How come kids don't have textbooks for each one of their classes? Where exactly does that money go?

They have the same problem in LAUSD. You know why? The little criminals steal the books every year and the parent (I would say parents but most of them don't live with both) don't care and are not charged for it.

They can complain all they want. Its their fault for not being accountable.

They have to cut the fat at the top. LAUSD's (and other corrupt school districts) top personnel have beautiful offices, large salaries, cars, and other perks. Kids go to LAUSD schools that are in horrible condition, overcrowded, no textbooks.

Something is seriously wrong somewhere. The money isn't in the classroom. It's at the top and it's staying there.

If students steal the books, then they should pay for them. Obviously, LAUSD doesn't care one way or the other.

"No wonder good teachers are hard to keep in the profession." You work only 180 days a year, earn up tp 60k and retire with 39k a year at age 55? I'd stay in it. Hey they always have Hillary to back them up, they love her you know. Especially the female teachers. Been there, I know.

"But with these drastic cuts just how will my daughter learn the proper proceedure for using a condom?"

Don't worry dear. They won't cut out the condom program, they'll just cut out buying textbooks instead!

,I.A NYC teacher called the Curtis and Kuby Show on WABC this morning and complained that he had eight textbooks for 150 students. NYC spends about $10,000 per kid per year. How come kids don't have textbooks for each one of their classes?

Where exactly does that money go?

Administrators. The school systems seem to be overloaded with administrators. Throw in a little waste, and corruption, it adds up to big money.

"The little criminals steal the books every year and the parent (I would say parents but most of them don't live with both) don't care and are not charged for it."

When I was young, my parents had to buy my school books at the beginning of the school term. At the end of the term the books could be turned in for cash if they were in good condition. That's the way it should be. If the books are given to the students they will not have any respect for them and treat them as an entitlement.

I remember when my daughter signed up for a German language class in high school. There were about thirty students in the class and four textbooks which they were supposed to share. She was not allowed to take her textbook home, of course, because it would not have been fair to the other students.

I tried to buy her a textbook but none were available for sale so she dropped the class.

Actually, here in Greenville County school district (SC), they are eliminating the position of Assistant Superintendant. It will save $2.5 million annually. They said the cut would affect "some principals" but would not affect teachers or students.
Makes you wonder why the heck the job existed in the first place.

Won't the NEA be surprised when we call or write and request and further support a tax cut.

Republicans are finally learning how to fight smart!

Here's a problem that the math teachers in the NEA can give to their students.

"Susan wants to start a business. The business has a 50 percent chance of making $150,000 and a 50 percent chance of losing $100,000. Susan is risk neutral; that is, she multiplies earnings and losses by probabilities and makes her decision based on whether the final loss is greater or less than zero.

For example, in the absence of taxes, her equation for making the decision would be ($150,000*0.5) +(100,000*0.5). The answer is $25,000. Since $25,000 is greater than zero, she would make the investment.

1. If the tax rate on earnings is 30 percent, how much does the government get from Susan's investment?

2. If the tax rate on earnings is 40 percent, how much does the government get from Susan's investment?

(I'll leave it to freepers to figure out the answers. Let's just say that very few math teachers in the NEA would assign this problem.)

What does a tax cut have to do with the NEA? This should demonstrate once and for all that the NEA is nothing but a political arm of the Democrat Party.

Yet Congress seems oblivious to the unfunded mandates it is imposing on our schools, to crowded classrooms, to course offerings cut, to schools in need of repair and renovation, to parents facing increased fees, and more.

I just recently saw a 1950's documentary on U.S. education. They were saying the exact same things back then.
At least the kids were being taught at that time.
The only things that have changed are the date and a teachers motivation to earn his or her government check.
They just got the biggest funding increase in American history, yet it's still not enough for them. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie everyone elses wealth. It's typical liberal mentality. Why work when the check comes free?

The NEA is exactly like the Democrats in Congress (and why we should get rid of them all)....they take as much of our money as they can beg or steal, then use it for payoffs to stay in power.
