Daschle to offer renewable fuels amendment JACK SULLIVAN Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Sen.s expect to debate a measure Thursday that would triple the use of ethanol and other renewable fuels over the next decade.
Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., and others will offer the proposal as an amendment to a broader energy bill.
Daschle and Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., said Republicans and Democrats alike support the measure, which would create a nationwide standard for the use of renewable fuels.
It also would ban the fuel additive MTBE in four years and provide funds to clean up MTBE contamination. MTBE, a petroleum product, is added to gasoline to reduce air pollution but has been banned in some states because it can pollute water.
Ethanol, which is made from corn, also makes gasoline burn cleaner.
Daschle said he will offer the amendment on Thursday and argued it would reduce the United States' dependence on foreign oil while boosting income for farmers and small towns.
"Passing this legislation is one of the most important things Congress can do to secure South Dakota's economic future," he said.
Ethanol already contributes more than $1 billion in new wealth and thousands of jobs a year to South Dakota's economy, he said.
Daschle and other farm-state lawmakers first introduced the amendment as a separate bill earlier this year. It is backed by a number of farm and energy groups.
Johnson said he's optimistic the amendment will be approved.
"I think the notion of the renewable fuels standard has really taken hold," he said.
But Johnson said other energy measures - including proposals to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and increase fuel-economy standards for vehicles - make the fate of the larger package uncertain.

Ethanol, which is made from corn, also makes gasoline burn cleaner. It also is a heck of a lot more expensive. But let's not let a little fact like that stop both Rep & RATs from selling this bill of goods.

California replaced MTBE with ethanol. The direct increase of having this additive per gallon is over 30 cents per gallon. Another ripoff driven by AMD.

If the Democrats are going to push ethanol or any other form of alcohol, they should get Senator Kennedy to announce it. The man knows about alcohol. Maybe some reporter will ask Kennedy how many miles per gallon he gets. However, I don't want to know about his emission standards.

Uh... the same Daschle who just bought a $ 1.9 million townhouse in DC? He's so, you know, for the LITTLE people...

Senator Kennedy created a unique process of mixing gasoline and seawater. Of course it's brutal to the car and passengers.

So is his wife getting paid as a lobbyit by the ethanol thugs or is he getting campaign funds.
They need some new stream of money now that Iraq has been shut down and her main airline clients/accounts are basically in or heading into bankruptcy.
