Across Santa Clara County, a number of school districts are making the painful decision to shutter schools in the face of falling enrollments and the state budget crisis.

As families leave the area to escape the economic slump and the high cost of living, and as districts brace for a projected $2 billion cut in state aid, many district officials say they have few other options to balance their budgets.

Although hardly routine, school closings are one byproduct of shifting demographics. They can result when a factory or military base is closed -- or when the economy goes south.

LOL.. shifting demographics... How about shifty politicians and unions 8-?

San Jose USD has Measure A on the ballot. I'm tired of getting hit in the pocketbook because of Davis' shortcomings.

You are stretching the meaning of education in your reply re what is happening in the "Kalifonia Publick Skools".

Brainwashing to become future progressives, socialists, communists and Islamofacists is a better description.

IF you ever watch KNBC channel 3 or 11 in San Jose or whatever the hell they are now, they have a real dork of a political analyst, Larry Gerston, who last night was talking about what to do when you run out of money like the city of San Jose has, and now faces a 77 million dollar deficit,,,, either cut services which they will, or maybe look at implementing a 1 cent local sales tax... or raise property taxes; ie ; reform Prop 13

This guy is such an idiot. Between KTVU,KNBC,KCBS and KABC, the Bay Area is in such deep doodoo media wise, it is almost funny if it weren't so sad to witness.

Liebralism/socialism is an illness... God Help Us All, at least the sane ones. ;-)

Schools and clinics will continue to close as long as unfunded mandates force tax dollars to be used to provide services for illegal aliens.
Viva la Raza, indeed.

What, there aren't fleets of illegal immigrants' children coming in to boost enrollment?

What, there aren't fleets of illegal immigrants' children coming in to boost enrollment?

Actually there are. Enrollment in California public schools is increasing by about 10% a year for the last 3 years.

Enrollment by Hispanics is inceasing at the greatest rate of any ethnic class. From a low of about 25% in 1981 to an average of about 43% per year for the last three years. Hispanics will soon constitute 50% of the enrollment in California public schools.

About 80% of the Hispanic children enrolled in public schools in 2000 could trace their residence to illegal immigration since 1950. That number will top 90% in the next five years if the immigration and birth rate trends hold.

So why are these northern California counties apparenlty against the trend. Two reasons: Gentrification and liberal, social pressure.

Gentrification is causing land values in these counties to be beyond the means of the typical illegal alien. The social pressure associated with these liberal elite enclaves is causing landlords in the area to not turn a blind eye to multiple families renting the house next door. The wealthy liberal will not tolerate 4 generations and 20 members of the extended Gonzales family to occupy the estate next door even if their combined income is sufficient to rent the old mansion.

Yes Virginia there is a Santa Clause. He's called gentrification.

Or people simply wising up and ditching government schools for private or homeschools.
