1 January 2002, Herr Davis slipped an increase of the Sales tax to us. I posted about it, but no one was interested. It was either a quarter or half %.

There was nothing in the papers about it. I took a roll of film to the local Walmart on 2 Jan to have developed. When the bill was presented, I asked what went up. The clerk said the sales tax, and that I was the first one to notice.

A few minutes later at an Ace Hardware, the clerk and the owner confirmed the increase. Again, I was the only one to notice. There was nothing in our local fishwrap about the increase.

The Republican plan, however, would call for $15 billion in cuts and freeze spending in two years.

Looks like Davis' first (and only) instinct to take care of a crisis is to borrow money and leave the problem for other people to handle when he's out of office. Electricity? Borrow money to pay off the debts. Employee pensions? Borrow money to make this year's contributions. Budget shortfall? Borrow money so that spending won't have to be cut. If we don't recall this idiot we're going to be chained to the oars paying this crap off for the rest of our lives.

I once saw a study that showed that, as sales taxes approach or exceed 10%, a vast underground economy is stimulated--one in which people begin to barter, or buy out-of-state, or just plain cheat.

Push it enough and the state will end up LOSING revenue.

Here in L.A. county the sales-tax rate is 8.25%...

What we really need in Cal is a $30 billion spending cut. The damn RATs think they can go on forever with spend, spend, spend, like there's no end to the amount of taxation and/or borrowing (which is a tax increase) they can do. The end result of this binge will be the total destrcution of an already fragile and stunted economy. I'll be leaving Cal when I retire, soon. The damn Marxists can have it. Its a shame, though, to have to leave it to those who have no appreciation for the efforts of those who made this state.

Of course it is; just stop funding all the freebies for the illegals swarming across an unprotected border.

The tax increase - which in Orange County would bump the sales tax to 8.25 percent – would be used to pay off $8.2 billion in new borrowing by the state.

Simpler solution - Don't borrow, grow some balls and do some cutting of redundant programs.
