Don't just support a continuation of the ban, as Bush has promised, but actively work to persuade the Republican-controlled Congress to pass it.

But Feinstein admits she faces ``uphill sledding'' in getting a new ban enacted. White House press secretary Ari Fleischer on Thursday would not say whether Bush would throw his political muscle behind the legislation.

"Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Thursday issued a challenge to President Bush as she began a difficult quest to save her landmark 1994 assault-weapons ban from expiring next year:"

Does this mean that DiFei's hubby has the govt contract to destroy this guns or did the govt-trough-feeding wealthy DiFei & hubby miss this one?

So the bad guys will just use "dumber" guns. The study doesn't say that crime went down...only the weapons changed.

Which of the President's policies and nominees is she willing to support in order to get her silly law supported?

Somebody should point out how her law saved us from the D.C. snipers.

Feinswine is dreaming if she thinks Bush will actively attempt to persuade members of congress to pass this bill. He has ticked off enough gun owners already with his brief statement a few weeks ago (through a spokesman), and if he takes this to the next step he'll be treading on dangerous ground. Hopefully Rove is wise enough to understand this.

``Military-style assault weapons simply have no place on America's streets,'' said Feinstein, a Democrat and staunch gun-control advocate.

But they do have a place in the homes of those law-abiding citizens who choose to own them.

The most important reason to own guns is neither hunting nor defence against criminals.

The most important reason to own guns is to preserve the rights of free citizens, as elucidated in the Declaration of Independence and codified in the Constitution of the United States of America.

A leading conservative activist with close White House ties predicted Feinstein's bid was hopeless. "We have the votes in the House and Senate to make sure this never sees the light of day,'' said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "It's never getting to the president's desk. It is a dead man walking."

I've been saying this for months, to all who will listen.

you just hit the nail on the head.
one more thing: it does not matter what anyone thinks, or feels about guns. guns dont need to have a place on the streets in america. we have the right to arm ourselves this right is not based on our ability to show some sort of a need.

arms have a place in our constitution, and thats the only thing that matters. no thought, no opinion, no 'need' can change this.

From the article: "Assault weapons accounted for 8.2 percent of all guns used in crimes in 1993, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. By November 1996, under the latest statistics available, assault weapons had decreased to 3.2 percent."

Rifles become "assault weapons" when it is convenient for the anti-gunners. The drop in use of banned weapons may be explained by criminals using Bushmasters without flash-hiders since the law was passed. That is a truly ridiculous "benefit" for anti-gunners to celebrate but the media will let them get away with it.

Rand and others point out that the Bushmaster XM-15, a modified assault rifle used by the Washington-area sniper last year, is legal under the current law and would still be legal under Feinstein's new legislation.

You mean the "sniper" had a Class III license? That's news to me. Somehow I doubt it, especially in Maryland.

I certainly hope this law is a dead man walking. I've already been emailing the White House about this for months. I better start on my Senators and Reps.

You're right, Dan. Nothing's for certain. That's why we have to continue to badger the congresscritters until the job is done. Bush's statement (through a spokesman) the other week helped galvanize us in a big way, fortunately.

I've already talked to my congressman about it. I'm not too worried about him.

Then we have Lenin and Stabusall. Worthless.. (The Senate is uncertain at best)

Rifles become "assault weapons" when it is convenient for the anti-gunners.

Handguns and shotguns too. If we let Fineswine, Shoomer and the VPC write the next law, any weapon that can fire more than one round per month will be banned. The anti's don't understand much about guns but they now realize what we all know, that flash hiders and bayonet lugs don't mean squat. They know enough to hire some disgruntled ex-shooter who can help them write a law that will flat out ban semiautos and removable magazines, written in a way that won't allow any useful modifications to evade the ban. Then we can consider anything more than a muzzleloader to be a 'preban'. We can't let them get away with this. This would be the straw that breaks this camel's back. /rant off
