My grandfather loathed the big band music my father always played. You call that music he would ask? My father swore up and down the Beatles had no talent and nobody would even know who they were in 10 years. I can't see any musical merit to the stuff my kids listen to. My kids absolutely can't stand my alternative country CD collection.

On and on it goes. Talent is in the eye of the beholder.

The difference is that "music" was at least musical.

You would think if we were able to kill Disco, we could kill rap. But it takes talent even to make disco. To make rap just takes an attitude.

I came across a 1960s Mad Magazine book, which had a piece on teen pop stars. The observation was made that, with every passing generation, teen pop stars were becoming more and more 'primitive': From Rudy Vallee to Frank Sinatra to Elvis to the Beatles. Looking to the future (ie, our present), the last graphic frame showed a caveman.

They got that right.

By the way, your father was right about the Beatles, give or take a few years. Try quizzing some young people about Beatle trivia, and you'll see how much less popular than Jesus they've become.

Give me a friggin' break!

They only instrument they "play" is their crotch or a turntable. Yeah, real talented.

They rip off parts of songs from actual artists. Stealing, yeah, that's talented.

Music is three things together: melody, harmony and rhythm.

Finally, look at who "hip-hop" appeals to. If you added up the collective IQs of ten hip-hop fans it wouldn't break 100.
