Thank God my daughter is going to the Air Force Academy this summer......

You would be surprised at the number of Freepers who would deny your daughter this opportunity because of her gender.

Cara will get an education in "diversity". Hopefully, she will survive it.

"Is sexual assault of women an Air Force Academy value now too?"

The only case I saw any reporting about on television (and I am sure it was the worst case) involved a girl who broke the academy rules by having an upper classman buy her and a male classmate and then she and the male classmate proceeded to drink the entire bottle. The girl then passed out from the alcohol. Even though she passed out, she claimed that an upper classman raped her, but what kind of a witness does a passed out person make?

If your daughter follows the rules and doesn't put up with crap and I sure she will be as safe or safer at the Air Force Academy as she would be at any other college.

Hey Max, you are right! My experience with two colleges was like yours---to the point directions, no frills, no special inducements and plenty of facts one had to learn fast or get trampled. I also learned that most of the freshmen who graduated from pretty good schools (in those ancient times and as compared to the trash HS education provided today), could not hack the real thing. At least a third flunked out the first semester.

The profs in those days also loved the Vet students whose motivation was generally much more focused and whose dedication to getting an education was obvious to all.

I am not flaming you I just wondered because my daughter was going to go until this years revalations."

The Sexual assault involved handful girls over a four year period......

The response from the Air Force has been overwhelming. They removed (retired) two Generals, a portion of the general command at the Academy, placed a OG's office at the Acedemy plus investigators, implemented new policies to prevent similar incidents and the schools dean personally met with each girl attending the Academy. The Secretary of the Airforce has this a a permanent item on his weekly briefing and has taken a leading role.

Compare this to the average Monday morning at most Universities & Colleges after the weekend Frat parties....Numerous girls are at the health office seeking counseling...

We hold our Military Schools to the standard of perfection and nothing less...

You tell me, where would your daughter be safer?

I'll put my money on the Academy any day.....

"Not necessarily. If you've ever worked overtime, you know that it wasn't always because you were goofing around."

Apples and oranges; poor analogy. I have worked overtime, but I have never worked all day and then all night and then all day.

"If you've got two days notice to do three big assignments,"

That is a big IF. Teachers do not give two days notice for BIG assignments. You know it and I know it, so get serious. I do not mean to imply that perhaps your kid failed to notify you that the teacher told him or her weeks ahead of time about the assignment and that he or she is just got around to telling you about the assignment a day or two before it is due.

"and extracurricular activities until six p.m. on both those days, you might very well be pulling a couple of all nighters." Malarkey, get the work done by midnight. Are you telling me that the work produced by going without sleep days is going to be worth anything?

"Extracurricular activities take up way more time than when I was young, and it's pretty much expected of top students who want to get into good schools."

More balderdash. Top grades and a killer SAT will get the kid into any school but the top two or three. Besides, I thought you were going to send your kid to a Christian school?

I guess they would deny the A-10 pilot who was almost shot down over Iraq providing close air support too....She was a Air Force Academy grad.....

Just read this 10 minutes ago and it sounds like the better schools are also demanding extra-curricular and community activities now - not just top grades and SAT scores. At least they are at UT and A&M. That's a major way to weed out applicants.

Yeah, but everybody knew that those "prestigious" schools just milk the undergrads for money. Nobody had respect for those programs.

My kids have three choices: Christian college A, B, or C.

Do you have any recommendations for a Christian college that is strong in engineering? Or hard sciences for a med school prep?

Actually, what can kill you is if you are taking a heavy course load at a tough school and 3 profs in 3 different courses assign heavy assignments due in the same period as 2 other profs have assigned heavy exams. Yes, to your point all-nighters are usually evidence of a failure to properly plan ahead. Sometimes you do get slammed, though.

Nonsense. Anyone in the top ten percent of their class can get into Texas or A&M, regardless of extra curricular activities.

Colleges talk about extra curricular activities, but it is still a numbers game. Numbers and race. That's a fact jack.

True, dark_lord, but you are talking college and the writer and momma bear are talking about HAVING to pull all nighters in high school. While assignments and tests can all be due at relatively short intervals, the students has lots of time to study and complete assignments ahead of the due date, if they have the foresight and discipline to do so, rather than wait until the last minute to try and get everything accomplished.

While I have pulled all nighters, it was not because I had no alternative, I could have done the work sooner, but instead of getting the work done early, I procrastinated.
