Sugar deal that Landrieu cited still unrefined

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., helped revive her re-election campaign last year by accusing the Bush administration of engineering a "secret deal" with Mexico that would flood the U.S. market with Mexican sugar and put Louisiana sugar-cane growers out of business.

Political analysts said a Landrieu TV ad that used the issue to attack Republican challenger Suzanne Haik Terrell for being too close to Bush helped seal the incumbent's 4 percentage-point victory in December.

Because of this Lie, We lost a Senate seat to the Democrats.

Landrieu told a whole string of lies. Her claim to be pro-life was probably the biggest whopper. But she wouldn't have succeeded without the supposedly conservative Breaux backing all her lies.

Is Breaux up this time around? He will end up paying for the Dems/Landrieu's lies.

Hell. We ought to totally eliminate the program. Only a small fraction of the elecotorate in Louisiana actually benefits from the program, but it is bad for consumers and bad for foreign producers of sugar. There are a few extremely wealthy producers who get most of the benefits from this program.

I wish we could point to that falsehood as the only reason the GOP failed to pick up a seat..but the sad fact is that LOuisiana does NOT vote out incumbents..no matter how lousy..the only incumbent to be voted out was in 1930..and huey long had to do it..incumbency is a cancer in this state..apathy is its friend..

Yes, he is up this time around. However, Breaux is as safe in LA as KKK Byrd in WV and Teddy in MA. No chance he will pay any price(in this world).

What did you expect Breaux to do, cross party lines and endorse the Republican candidate? That's fantasyland thinking, no matter if he is one of the more conservative Democrats.

Breaux's seat is one of, if not the most secure in the Senate. The job is his for as long as he wants it. Forget about making him pay. Ain't gonna happen. Although he could retire....there has been talk that he's tired of Washington.

As others have said here before, the Landrieu-Terrell race was the Republicans to lose. They botched it, pure and simple. If you're looking to place blame, look no further than Terrell's people and their out of state advisors, none of whom apparently had a clue about how to run a race in Louisiana.

Sadly, this is true. It may be a national problem. The day of the election, I had a co-worker actually say, "Well, I wonder which woman I should vote for (Mary "D" or Suzanne "R")?" (I thought, If you don't know by now, then you shouldn't vote.)
