you may want to check out one called "The Gulag Archipelago"
look for the abridged version...about 300 pages, down from several thousand...It really shows the inner workings of Stalin's terror regime...makes Hitler look like a boy scout.

The Gulag Archipeligo is the abridged version. I was reading yet another in this vein, (which, BTW, was recommended by another FReeper) by Martin Amis, named
Koba the Dread: Laughter and the Twenty Million, also highly recommended, and Amis says the unabridged is indispensible. Dang it - another expensive set of bricks for the shelf...

I read the original 20 years ago. That and everything Ayn Rand wrote takes me forever to read, unlike most other authors :)
Is the abridged verion available online, besides Amazon?
