The righteous indignation and moral outrage that predictably shows up on threads like this

Amen.

Moral judgement is the nectar (and weakness) of the far right.

BUMP

And Daddy gets to pay $25K per annum to have little precious turned into a rabid America hating lesbian.

If she/he/it wants to be in a college dorm like this I don't think there is much "turning" left to do.

Wesleyan University in Connecticut will in September inaugurate a “gender-blind” dormitory for incoming students who aren’t sure what sex they are, reports the Hartford Courant

When they open a coed nymphomaniac dorm, I'm in....

As Liddy astutely points out, the correct term is SEX not GENDER.
Bump.

Jamie Lee Curtis ... is chromosomally a male. She is totally infertile.
If Jamie Lee Curtis were truly chromosomally a male (XY), she would be presumptively fertile. As I understand it, she is neither chromosomally male nor chromosomally female -- i.e., neither XX nor XY -- but some other combination.

'Would you settle for Jamie Lee Curtis? Or at least so goes the rumor.'

Urban legend.

I've heard that rumour before. Got any proof whether it's true or false?

Nope. The reference was meant as a joke, not a statement of fact -- or something that I believe in.

Snopes lists it as "undetermined." Curtis has never confirmed or denied it, not that denial would end the rumors.

The Snopes article notes that the incidence of children born with "mixed genitalia" is somewhere between 1 in 2,000 and 1 and 3,000. Given that Wesleyan has just under 3,000 students, you'd expect one student born with "mixed genitalia." I don't what the percentages are with regard to surgery to assign a single set of genitalia, before college.

There are many documented cases of people with XXXY, etc. chromosomes - definitely confused gender. How common is probably not fully known.

Ambiguous Genitalia and Intersexuality

Excerpt:

Background: Intersex conditions are among the most fascinating conditions encountered by the clinician. The ability to diagnose infants born with intersex conditions has advanced rapidly in recent years. In most cases today, clinicians can promptly make an accurate diagnosis and counsel parents on therapeutic options. However, the paradigm of early gender assignment has been challenged by the results of clinical and basic science research, which show that gender identity development likely begins in utero. While the techniques of surgical genital reconstruction have been mastered, the understanding of the psychological and social implications of gender assignment is poor. This article focuses on newborn evaluation and the differential diagnosis in children with intersex conditions, including children with ambiguous genitalia.

Traditional intersex classifications

For convenience, intersex conditions traditionally have been divided into the following 5 simplified classifications based on the differentiation of the gonad:

Female pseudohermaphrodite - Two ovaries

Male pseudohermaphrodite - Two testes

True hermaphrodite - Ovary and/or testis and/or ovotestis

Mixed gonadal dysgenesis - Testis plus streak gonad

Pure gonadal dysgenesis - Bilateral streak gonads (A streak gonad is dysgenetic and resembles ovarian stromal tissue. No germ cells are present.)

The internal ducts and external genitalia may vary in development, since the presence of apparently male or female gonads does not necessarily correlate with the patient's gender identity.

Pathophysiology: Adequate comprehension of normal and abnormal sexual differentiation is essential to understanding intersex disorders. A summary of current knowledge regarding the embryology and classification of intersex states provides an appropriate introduction to the topic.

Well, that's the dorm for me all right! I have "ambiguous genitalia," or at least I think I do - when your girlfriend starts laughing and says "what the hell is that?", that's ambiguity, right?
