The University of Mississippi's Colonel Reb, the old Southern gentleman who serves as the Rebels' sports mascot, could be in for a makeover to reflect the 21st century.

"It doesn't fit anything we do," Ole Miss athletics director Pete Boone said Monday. Colonel Reb is "an 18th-century person," and it's not logical to keep that mascot around representing Ole Miss sports teams, he said.

"Logos and images like that get old, outdated and stale," Alford said.

Let's see now, who would make a good modern day Rebel?
Got any ideas or pics?

There is nothing wrong with that picture.

But in order to appease the Diversity Police, perhaps a black slave or two could be added.

(sarcasm on) Maybe they could replace it with a Worm, call him Earthy. Who needs tradition anyway? When are we going to do something about the American Flag? The one we have now is old and tired. We need something spicey. (sarcasm off)

Not trying to be technical, but obviously this guy is not schooled very well. 18th Century equates to the 1700s. I believe he wanted to say 19th century since the school was founded in the 1850's.

LOL! If the mascot is too old then maybe they should change the nickname of the school too. But I doubt Young Miss or New Miss would have the same attraction.

I think this is more about selling caps and tees than anything else. If you go to the Ole Miss official athletic web site you will find only a handful of Colonel Reb items. Although I did find this one Colonel Reb item that seems to have already been modernized..........

There is no buzz. This is the first I've heard about it. Of course, that's probably because right now it's between sessions, and the students are out of town.

I've got an idea for updating Col. Reb. How about putting him in this uniform?...it's totally 21st Century, and it's guaranteed to p!ss off the PC crowd!
