Atkins is not snake oil. It's a very healthy way of eating, one loses weight rapidly and every pea brain knows that exercise is a must.

It's not only A very unhealthy way of eating, it is THE most unhealthy way of eating. Atkins combined the obvious ie don't eat food processed with sugar or dairy/shortening (ie pasta, bread, cake, candy, etc) with the easy: meat.

What's really crazy is that he has cast the world's staples in a negative light: oats, rice, wheat and potatoes. These should be over 50% of most people's daily diets (without butter/sour cream). The rest should be fruits/vegetables.

Most dieticians would probably think meat at 10% is too high; I make a concession and go crazy on week-ends BBQing fish, chicken, steak, pork, etc., but I know not to do this more than 2 times per week.

Dude, that stuff ain't food. That stuff is what they feed food to get it all fat, tender, and juicy before they slaughter it. Or to get critters make better quality eggs and dairy products.

Of course, when I was eating "the world's staples", I got nice and fat, tender, and juicy myself. Never did produce good eggs though.

Nope, the food pyramid--with grains as the base--was instituted to get us to support the grain industry.

So now we have an obesity epidemic, because people have been beefing up on what farmers use to fatten their cattle for the market!

____________

I agree....it is extremely unhealthy.....

After doin' this for 23 years, I saw Atkins come and go in the 70's.....
I have had to deal with the post Atkins fallout over the years (hyperlipidemia, hypertension, keto-acidotic respiratory failure, massive fecal impactions, macroalbuminemia)....and rebound weight gain....over and over and over.....

I don't disagree with the need to cut out the refined carbs.....but you still need 50% of your kcal per day from CHO for brain function (don't get me started on the obvious)

Yet, all things in moderation (ya have to stay sane too ;) )

If I ate like that, I'd probably be well on my way to going blind or losing a limb. Not everyone can metabolize sugars and starches.

Do a little research on the health differences between hunter-gatherer peoples and agrarian ones. You'll be shocked.

Most dieticians would probably think meat at 10% is too high;

Most dieticians I've run into have been brainwashed by the government's so-called pyramid. They couldn't find their butts with both hands, a Thomas Guide and a GPS receiver.

I make a concession and go crazy on week-ends BBQing fish, chicken, steak, pork, etc., but I know not to do this more than 2 times per week.

Well, that just means MORE MEAT FOR ME!!!!!!!

I know of people who lost a lot of weight on the "God's diet" which eliminates all processed foods. You're supposed to eat like people used to --you can have potatoes, meat, vegetables but nothing with corn starch, corn syrup, no sugar ---if God didn't make it don't eat it. It's easier to give up all junk foods.

Hint: read the article and learn what those of us on the Atkins program have known for a long time. Going on the plan improves your cholesterol numbers.

Wrong! Guess you're really irritated that the naysayers have come around and are eating crow about Atkins now that their own studies have proven what he knew all along. You can't argue with the medical facts and Atkins has over 20 years of data that prove his diet not only works, but it is also a HEALTHY way of eating.

Do yourself a favor and read his book. It makes perfect sense and is very thought provoking. You might learn something.

I know three dieticians. One is overweight, one morbidly obese, and none of the three can make an edible meal. Right now dieticians are out selling "Syndrome X", which is just a modified Atkins.
